Loretta Neu, 97, Paynesville
Loretta E. Neu, 97, of Paynesville and formerly of Eden Valley, died on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Paynesville Area Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley. Burial was held at the parish cemetery.

Loretta lived in the Eden Valley area all her married life and later moved to Paynesville.

Survivors include her sons and daughters, Donald (Janette) Neu of Kalispell, Mont., Corrine (Roger) Wicker, Duane (Ruth) Neu, and Jerome (Betty) Neu, all of St. Cloud, Eugene (Regina) Neu of Milbank, S.D., Kenneth Neu of Monticello, Elmer (Carolyn) Neu, Laura (David) Stanger, Aloys (Mary) Neu, Sandra (Keith) Deadrick, all of Paynesville, and Bernard (Helen) Neu of Shakopee; sister, Clara Heibel of St. Cloud; 51 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.


LeRoy Notch, 73, Paynesville
LeRoy Joseph Notch, 73, of Paynesville passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, Feb. 2, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.

Entombment took place at the St. Louis Parish Mausoleum with full military honors.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Roy taught industrial arts in the Paynesville School District for 27 years before retiring in August 1989.

Roy is survived by his four children David of Hastings; Paul of Seattle, Wash.; Tom of Waconia; and Anne of Belgrade; nine grandchildren; and a brother Jerry of Hutchinson.


John Theis, 75, Eden Valley
John "Louis" Theis, 75, of Eden Valley died on Sunday, Jan. 28, in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Evans-Nordby Funeral Home in Osseo. Interment was held at the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Survivors include his daughter, Teresa (Tom) Dery of Rockford.


Christopher Welle
Christopher "Chris" D. Welle, 18, of Spring Hill, died on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Interment was held at the parish cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Jim "Chico" and Kathy Welle of Spring Hill; brothers, Kurt, Travis, and Derek, all of Spring Hill; and grandparents, Bernice Welle of Spring Hill and Ronald and Lucille Lieser of Lake Henry.


Viola Olmscheid, 81, New Munich
Viola A. Olmscheid, 81, of New Munich died on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Interment was held at the parish cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Leo Olmscheid of New Munich; children, Duane Olmscheid and his wife, Connie, of Paynesville, Judy Olmscheid of Melrose, Jane Jensen and her husband, Mike, of Paynesville, Linda Hess and her husband, Dale, of Paynesville, and Roger Olmscheid and his wife, Jackie, of Pequot Lakes and sister, Lorraine Olmscheid and her husband, Jerome, of Lake Henry.


Matthew Gene Roos, 24, Paynesville
Matthew Gene Roos, 24, of Paynesville, died on Friday morning, Jan. 26, near Perham, from injuries sustained in a four-wheeler accident.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial was held at the church cemetery.

Matthew Gene Roos was born on May 26, 1982, in Paynesville, the son of Jeffrey and Karen (Lounsbury) Roos. He grew up on the family farm in rural Paynesville and attended Paynesville High School, graduating in 2001.

Survivors include his parents, Jeff and Karen Roos of Paynesville; and grandparents, Darel Lounsbury of Paynesville and William and Ellen Roos of Paynesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.


Benjamin Bowar, 76, Paynesville
Benjamin A. Bowar, 76, of Paynesville, died on Monday, Jan. 22 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, Jan. 26, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.

Entombment was held at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.

Ben and his wife, Geraldine, moved to Paynesville in 1964, and Ben worked as a meat cutter and worked construction for Runge Construction while they built the new high school and placed the new addition on the Paynesville Hospital. Ben was also the groundskeeper at the Paynesville High School until he became disabled in 1983.

Ben is survived by his wife, Gerry of Paynesville; daughters, Ginny (Steve) Chevalier of Paynesville and Mary (Jason) Rausch of Paynesville.


Rose Peltz, 78, Cold Spring
Rose E. Peltz, 78, of Cold Spring died on Monday, Jan. 22, at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Jan. 18, at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Burial was at the parish cemetery.

Rose was born in Richmond, farmed north of Roscoe with her husband Leander until their retirement in 1994, and retired in St. Martin.

Survivors include her husband, Leander.


Jack Hood, 65, Mendota Heights
Jack Hood, 65, of Mendota Heights passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The wake was held on Sunday, Jan. 21, and the Mass of Resurrection was held at the Neumann Church in Eagan on Monday, Jan. 22. Internment was held at resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights.

Jack attended school in Paynesville, graduating with the Class of 1959.


Joseph Majchrzak, 54, St. Joseph
Joseph E. Majchrzak, 54, of St. Joseph died on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the St. John Baptist Abby Church in Collegeville. Joseph lived in Paynesville prior to marrying Diane Weber in 1972. Together, they lived in Paynesville.


Ellsworth Hein, 85, Paynesville
Ellsworth "Al" W. Hein, 85, of Paynesville died on Thursday, January 11, at the Koronis Manor Care Center in Paynesville.

Private services was held at a later date.

Al is survived by his wife Irene of Paynesville; daughter, Suzanne (James) Brick of Lake Henry; and son, John of Paynesville.


Marie, 91, Eden Valley
Marie R. Theis, 91, of Eden Valley died on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at St. Benedict's Center in St. Cloud.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Friday, Jan. 12, at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley. Burial was held at the parish cemetery.

She lived her entire life in Eden Valley where she was a homemaker and worked for Valley Rest Home and the local café.


Agda Hixon, 90, Irving Township
Agda Eline Hixon, 90, of Irving Township passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at Zion Irving Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Interment was held at the Zion Irving Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to Zion Irving Lutheran Church.


Jerome Braun, 81, St. Cloud
Jerome H. "Jerry" Braun, 81, of St. Cloud passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in St. Cloud.

His brother, Reverend Virgil Braun, officiated. Burial with military honors was held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Jerry is survived by two brothers, Michael of Regal and Reverend Virgil of Eden Valley.


William Rooney, 74, Paynesville
William Rooney, 74, of Paynesville died on Monday, Jan. 1, at the Regency Hospital in Golden Valley.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Church of Our Lady in Manannah. Burial was at St. Donatus Catholic Cemetery in Brooten.

He is survived by his wife, Rose of Paynesville.


Shirley Haubach, 81, Ill.
Shirley R. Haubach, 81, of Lena, Ill., died on Thursday, Dec. 21, at her home.

Services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Lena United Methodist Church in Lena, Ill. Interment was at Lena Burial Park in Lena, Ill.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie "Tiff" (Chuck Koshiol) Wolff of Paynesville.


Pauline Houck, 57, Minneapolis
Pauline Jane Houck died on Sunday, Dec. 24, from a long battle of cancer. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church in Maple Grove.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1949, and died on Dec. 24, 2006.

She is survived by her mother, Cornelia Fredrick; sons, Wesley Houck, Gregory Houck, and Shawn (Mary Kay) Houck; brothers, John, Steven, Allen, and Lesley; and sisters, Rose, Irma, Mildred, and Barb, all of the Paynesville area.


Julie Sonstegard, 49, Luxumbourg
Julie Sonstegard, 49, of Luxembourg City, Luxumbourg, and Spicer, Minn., died on Monday, Dec. 11.

Her funeral service was held in Luxembourg City on Thursday, Dec. 14, at Merle Cemetery, Rue des Aubepines, Luxembourg.

She was born to Don and Elise Sonstegard on Jan. 18, 1957, in Paynesville. She grew up in Paynesville and attended the Paynesville schools, graduating from PHS in 1975.
