Darlene Olson, 87, Paynesville
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville for Darlene J. Olson, 87, of Paynesville. Pastor Bill Nixon will officiate. Burial of her cremated remains will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita, Kan., at a later date. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home in Paynesville. Darlene was born Aug. 19, 1932, in Hutchinson, Kan., to James and Myrtle (McQuilliam) Lanning. After graduating high school in 1950, she married John Roger Morgan in Hutchinson, Kan. To this union four children were born. They later divorced. She married Jennis B. Olson. They united their families, and after several years they moved to Paynesville, Minn., in 1972. Darlene became an active member of the Paynesville community, serving on the Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering at the R.O.S.E. Center, becoming an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Litchfield, and was an advocate of the Alzheimer's Association. Darlene is survived by her children Kathie (Peter) Chandler of Wilson, Wyo., Jacob Morgan of Aztec, N.M., Teresa Lee of Haysville, Kan., Liz (Harry) Lahr of Paynesville, and Marilyn (Brian) Butler of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and brothers Donald Lanning of Kansas and Paul Lanning of Ohio. Preceding Darlene in death were her parents; husband Jennis; son Jim Olson; daughter-in-law Renon Morgan, sister Deana Weber; brother Francis Lanning; and one great-granddaughter. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.


Lawrence Haider Jr., 90, Belgrade

Lawrence Michael Haider Jr., 90, of Belgrade, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Lake Henry. Reverend Glenn Krystosek and Reverend David Grundman concelebrated. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Lawrence was born on March 29, 1929, in Lake Henry Township to Lawrence and Anna (Gruber) Haider. He attended a one-room school house across from his family farm, which was the original Gruber homestead settled in 1881. Lawrence (Mikey, Larry, Sonny) farmed with his parents until their retirement in 1960. He continued farming into his 80s. Lawrence was a very devout Catholic with a deep loving devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Lawrence was an avid gardener and his flower beds were his pride and joy. He loved fishing, bowling, and spending time with friends at the casinos. Lawrence also enjoyed travelling and treasured his trip to the Holy Land. He was also a family historian and made trips to Europe to explore the family roots and share the knowledge with others. Lawrence was a lifetime member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Lake Henry, chief ranger in the Catholic Order of Forester, and patron of Little Flower of St. Therese in Dearborn, Mich., St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Mont., St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D., the Crosier Fathers of Onamia, and other non-profit organizations. Survivors include his sisters, Bernadine Massmann of Rockville and Margaret Meyer of Sauk Centre; sister-in-law, Helen of Crosby; brother-in-law, Paul Wesbur; and many nieces and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Anna; brothers, Rudy and Joseph; sister, Marie Hagemeier Steil Wesbur; and brothers-in-law, Edmund Massmann, Eugene Meyer, Leander Hagemeier, and Wally Steil. Lawrence was adopted by many friends and neighbors throughout the years, and all were blessed for having been part of his life.


John Liebl, 82, Paynesville

Matt Doom, 26, Clearwater, Fla.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville for Matthew John Doom, 26, of Clearwater, Fla., and formerly of Paynesville, Minn., who passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019 in Clearwater, Fla. Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial Mass at the church. Matthew John Doom was born on Jan. 19, 1993, to David and Julie (Baklund) Doom in Willmar, Minn. Matthew graduated with honors and was active in wrestling, football, track, and baseball. In football, Matthew had the school record for 58 solo tackles in a season and also the school record for 109 solo tackles in a career. He also did very well in wrestling with a career record of 94 wins and 30 losses, which included 46 pins and only pinned nine times, was a 2011 state runner-up, and a 2010 state entrant. During his junior and senior years, he worked for Ron and Judy's Restaurant in Paynesville as a cook. After graduation he attended Moorhead College for two years and went on to work for Jon Baklund in the tool and die field. In that timeframe, he also started a deejay business called Midnight Blue. He had a love for music, playing the piano and saxophone in school. He also worked for Delbert Kingsritter, where he loved driving tractor and had a love for riding horses. In January 2019, he moved to Clearwater, Fla., to start a business with his brother Justin Baklund, which they called B&D Machining. Matthew was an outgoing person who always wanted to be the best that he could be. He excelled in everything he did. Matthew was a hard-working man, who would help out anybody. He was a beloved son, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend of many and will truly be missed by all that knew him. He had a sparkle in his eye and a smile that would light up the room. He had many hobbies such as fishing, hunting, and golf. Matthew is survived by his mother, Julie (Ruter) Doom; father, David Doom (Tammy); brothers, Michael Doom, Justin Baklund, and Jordan Warnke; grandparents; uncles; aunts; a niece; two nephews; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Clause and Anna Ruter, John and Alice Lecocq, Mathias and Josephine Morin, and Joseph and Bernice Doom; grandparents, Dorothy Ruter, Lucas Ruter and Elton Sletta; great aunts, Victoria LeCocq and Terry Marie Doom; great uncles, Ronald Doom and James Miller; and uncle, Michael Ruter. Arrangements are with the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville.


John Liebl, 82, Paynesville

John B. Liebl 82, of Paynesville, died on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020, at the Centra-Care Hospital in Paynesville. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for later designation. John was born July 26, 1937, to John A. and Crescentia E. (Hartung) Liebl in New Ulm, Minn. He graduated Holy Trinity High School in 1955. John married Donna Cecelia Kotten on April 20, 1960, in St. George, Minn. John and Donna moved to Paynesville in 1961 where they raised their six sons. John began his career at Paynesville Grain and Feed. This was followed by Liebl Construction, Inc., and a long career at Maple Lake Lumber Company He retired in 2000 and worked until recently installing garage doors for many in the area. Throughout his life, John was very active in the Catholic church. He also served for the United States Army Reserve, American Legion, Catholic Aid Association, and was a volunteer driver for the R.O.S.E. Center. He recently received his 40-year sobriety pin in Alcoholics Anonymous and has been a mentor to countless members. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and is survived by Donna, his wife of nearly 60 years; sons: John (Lisa) of Atwater, Daniel (Vicky) of Lake Henry, Michael (Sherri) of Richmond, Thomas (Pattie) of Guyton, Ga., Scott (Linda) of Paynesville, and Aaron (Danyal) of Belgrade along with 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brothers: Francis and Anthony (Karen); sisters: Susan (Donald) Forster, Monica Stephenson, and Mary (Cyrus) Case; and dog, Bam-Bam. John was preceded in death by his parents: John and Crescentia; and brothers: Donald, Joseph, and Jerome. Services were entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.


Michael Braun, 91, Paynesville

Michael William Braun, 91, of Paynesville, died on Saturday, Jan. 4, at CentraCare Health - Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. The Reverend Glenn Krystosek will be the celebrant. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Regal. Arrangements are with the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Mike was born on May 18, 1928, in Lake Henry Township, Stearns County, the son of John and Susan (Heinen) Braun. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 96 Elementary School and graduated from Belgrade High School. On Nov. 22, 1951, Mike was united in marriage to Gladys Nietfeld in Meire Grove. They made their home near Regal, where they farmed. After retiring, they moved into the town of Regal. After his wife, Gladys, died on Dec. 8, 2014, Mike then moved to 700 Stearns in Paynesville, which has been his home since that time. While on the farm, Mike was an award-winning dairy farmer. He and Gladys had their own spearing ice houses; they both enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mike enjoyed a good game of cards and was willing to take your money. He loved watching sports and especially the Regal baseball team. Mike will be remembered as a compassionate, thoughtful man, a devoted father who loved his family and had a good sense of humor. While at 700 Stearns, Mike met his special friend, Anna, and they spent many good times together, including trips to the casino. He is survived by his children, Catherine (Robert) Kohlmeier of Duluth, John (Jackie) Braun of Paynesville, Philip (Gale) Braun of Avon, and Gregory (Mary) Braun of Cold Spring; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn "Curly" Braun of Belgrade; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; his special friend, Anna Johnsrud, nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by; his wife of 63 years, Gladys; one son, Michael Jr. (Mickey); one great-granddaughter, Delaney Braun; two sisters, Alvina and Lucille; and six brothers, Aloys, Elmer, Walter, Othmar, Jerome, and Father Virgil.


Lloyd Laine, 89, Paynesville

Lloyd Laine of Paynesville died on Dec. 30, 2019, at the age of 89. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Lloyd Norman Laine was born on Sept. 16, 1930, in Oulu Township, Iron River, Wis., to Lawrence and Jennie (Hakala) Laine. As an only child growing up on the family farm, his love for farming led to his career in agriculture, earning his degree from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. He then enlisted in the army and served two years in Panama as a surveyor during the early 1950s before his honorable discharge. He then got a job with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Bemidji, Minn. On June 9, 1956, he married Doris Davidson. Their union was blessed with two daughters and two sons. During the following years they made their homes in Baudette, Minn., McIntosh, Minn., Breckendridge, Minn., New York Mills, Minn., Long Prairie, Minn., and finally, Paynesville. He worked as a soil conservation agent for 17 years, then as a teacher for 18 years, after which he worked at Paynesville Fleet Supply for 10 years before retiring. During his life he enjoyed hunting, playing baseball in his younger years, watching his children and grandchildren play sports, fishing, and helping his wife's family at their resort on Upper Red Lake. He loved telling stories of all his adventures and reading, especially World War 2 history. In his later years he took up needle point, with many of his works going to each of his children. Lloyd will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Doris; children, Julie (Gary) Fearing of Paynesville, Minn., Richard (Marcia) Laine of Osakis, Minn., Debra Kincade of Paynesville Minn., and Greg (Laura) Laine of Hibbing, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Kevin Kincade; and one grandson.


Murlin Olson, 98, Paynesville

Murlin D. Olson, 98, of Paynesville, died on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville. His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Murlin Duane Olson was born in his grandfather's log cabin on Nov. 3, 1921, the firstborn to Deodor and Jennie Olson. He was baptized and confirmed in Nordland Lutheran Church and attended school at District 19 country school. On Aug. 1, 1942, he was inducted into the navy and trained as a diesel mechanic. He served on an LST and was sent to the South Pacific. In June 1944, he returned home on a medical discharge and began to farm. On June 1, 1946, he married Edna Borgstrom. This union was blessed with three children. The family made their home in rural Paynesville, where Murlin was a farmer and a carpenter, building nearly 40 houses in the community. Murlin remained a lifelong member of Nordland, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and enjoyed fellowship with The Couples Club. He also served on the Union Grove Township Board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling with Edna, planting a garden, being with his grandchildren, making Lefse, and spending time with friends. He had a great sense of humor, and he was a great listener. Murlin is survived by his children, Douglas Olson (Martha) of Punta Gorda, Fla., Colleen Vinkemeier of Annandale, Minn., and Patty Crawford of Minneapolis; five grandchildren, Lori Anders (Eric) of Walnut Creek, Calif., Lisa Olson of Plano, Texas, and Mark Olson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeff Vinkemeier (Christina) of Norwood Young America, Minn., and Amy Halquist (David) of Henderson, Minn.; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Murlin also leaves two sisters, Darleen Glenz and Glenice Schaumann (Jonathan) of Paynesville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; sister, Pearl Hendrickson; brother, Norman Olson; son-in-law, Gary Vinkemeier; and countless friends and relatives. Donald Grages, 81, Paynesville

Donald H. Grages, 81, of Paynesville died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at his home in rural Paynesville. His funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery. A visitation will be on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Donald "Donnie" Harry Grages was born on July 10, 1938, in Benson, Minn., and died unexpectedly on Jan. 2, 2020, in his home in Paynesville at the age of 81. He was the son of Harry and Bernadine (Schlieman) Grages. Don was the oldest of ten children growing up in Holloway Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and graduated from Holloway High School in 1956. On Aug. 9, 1963, Don married Mardonna Mueller in Ortonville, Minn. They shared 56 years of marriage and were blessed with five children: Todd (Heidi) Grages of Omaha, Nebraska, Timm Grages of Paynesville, Minn., Michelle (Jeff) Clements of Delano, Minn., Nichole (Joel) Bjerke of Buffalo, Minn., and Dustin (Nicole) Grages of Rogers, Minn. He had nine grandchildren: Tyler (Tawni) and Justin Grages; Lindsey (fiancˇ Sean) and William Lucas Clements; Jake and Emma Bjerke; Brooklyn, Greyson, and Mia Grages. Don and Mardonna shared their life in Cosmos, Minn., from 1968-1994, after which they resided at their Koronis lake home outside of Paynesville. In 1955, at the age of 17, Don joined the Army National Guard. Don served 32 years in the Army National Guard and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Don attended Basic Officer Infantry School and Advanced Officer Infantry School at Ft. Benning, GA. Don later attended the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. During his time as an Infantry Officer, Don served as a Platoon Leader, Company Commander, Race Relations/Equal Opportunity Officer, Battalion Staff Officer (S-1, S-2, S-3, and XO), G-5 of the 47th Inf Div., Battalion Commander and Directorate of Personnel and Community Activity. Don was extremely proud of his military service. Don graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and went on to teach and coach football, basketball, and baseball at Bellingham High School and Westbrook High School in Minnesota. Don received his master's degree from Mankato State Minnesota and became principal at Westbrook High School in 1965. Don and Mardonna moved to Cosmos, Minn., in 1968 where he spent his time as principal and athletic director. He retired from ACGC in 1994, completing 35 years in the field of education. In his retirement, Don became a realtor and spent the next 14 years selling real estate. He enjoyed retirement at his lake home spending time with his family and watching football, basketball, and the Twins. He was an avid Gopher, Viking, and Twins fan and rarely missed a game on TV. He also really enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching his grandchildren's activities. Don was a beloved husband, dad, papa, and big brother who will be truly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Mardonna; children, grandchildren, and siblings Lannie (Bonnie) Grages, Jim Grages, Wendy Graf, Mike Grages, Arly (Karla) Grages, Randy Grages, and Connie (Jack) Siljendahl. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jerry Grages and Delroy Grages.


Rebecca Johnson, 59, Grove City

Rebecca S. Johnson, 59, of Grove City died on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019, at the CentraCare Hospital in Paynesville. Her funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 30, 2019, at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be at Burr Oak Cemetery in rural Grove City. Rebecca Sue Johnson was born on Aug. 23, 1960, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Rev. W. James and Rita (Gnewotta) Krueger. She attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Skokie, Ill., before her family moved to New Richmond, Wis., where Beckie attended New Richmond Middle and High schools, graduating with the Class of 1978. After high school, Beckie went on to attend WITC where she received her medical assistant degree in 1981. On Nov. 21, 1981, Beckie was united in marriage to Jeffery A. Johnson at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in New Richmond. This union was blessed with two sons and a daughter. The family made their home in Fairbault, Minn., until 1990, when they moved to Brookings, S.D. In 1993, Beckie and Jeff moved to Alexandria, Minn., until 2001, when they moved to the Paynesville area. After moving to Paynesville, Beckie worked at Valley Industries in Paynesville. Beckie was a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. She was active in churches in every town they lived volunteering in religious education roles, church council, many different boards, choir, and bell choir. Beckie enjoyed playing softball, bowling, gardening, feeding birds, making venison sausage with friends, and going on boat rides. She also enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings and loved Adam Thielen. Beckie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jeff of Grove City; children: Jacob (Erin) of St. Francis, Joshua of Anoka, and Stephanie of Grove City; and grandchildren: Nolan, Ariana, Lana, Caleb, and Luke. Beckie is also survived by her siblings, Mark (Sharon) Krueger of Cambridge, Jean Krueger (Brian Teppen) of East Lansing, Mich., and Linda (Dr. J.P.) Hill of Rockwall, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. Beckie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John. Jacqueline Deming, 83, Ohio

Jacqueline Faye Deming, 83 of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019, at Springfield Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will take place at a later time and date. She was born on May 16, 1936, in Paynesville, Minn., to the late Edwin R. and Virginia L. (Gruetzmacher) Schaumann Sr. Jackie was the church organist for 45 years at Calvary Temple-Assembly of God Church in Columbus, Ohio. She enjoyed all types of gardening but most of all, having her family around her was her greatest joy. In addition to her parents, Jackie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Milton Deming; a daughter, Julie Deming; and brother, Edwin Schaumann Jr. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Conway Deming, Sylvia (George) Niemeyer, Toni (Jim) Franklin, and Edwin (Kathy) Deming; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Jonathan (Glenice) Schaumann, Marian (Gene) Tezel, Judy Yukon, and Roger (Gladys) Schaumann.
