On Saturday, July 27, 2024, Walter Michael Moorhouse, born Walter Michael Bechik, passed away peacefully with family by his side at his lake home in Richmond, Minn. Walter was born on a truly special day - May 21, 1947 - in St. Paul, Minn., to Walter M. Bechik and Bernadine N. (Willson Moorhouse) Bechik. Walter often reflected on the remarkable influence his grandparents had on his life. As a young boy, he spent time at both farm and factory learning life's most important lessons. His grandfather, Michael P. Bechik, an inventor and businessman, taught his grandson to live with a strong sense of purpose and drive, and ignited a relenting passion for tinkering and fixing anything he could get his hands on. His grandmother, Mary Bechik, the matriarch of the family, who gave Walter the nickname 'Butchy,' exuded love and compassion upon him, and wove the family traditions deep within his heart. During the summer, Walter would make the long journey to the farmstead to visit his beloved grandparents Goldie and Edwin Wilson. The farm, nestled in the rolling hills of the countryside, was a paradise for a young, curious, and energetic boy like Walter, and an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. His grandparents (Wilson) fostered in him the value of hard work, the importance of family dinners, furthered his love and nurturing of animals, and provided the peaceful seclusion of the country to gain confidence in himself and in his abilities. With all the faith and wisdom gained in his younger years, Walter began his journey as a young man, attending Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn., and Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minn. He later transferred to the prestigious St. John's Northwest Academies in Delafield, Wis., where he fostered his love for aviation, the art of flight, and music, earning the rank of corporal and graduating on June 6, 1965. He attended college at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., and Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D., studying chemical engineering. A man of many talents and passions, Walter's love for music was evident throughout his life. He sang and played in bands such as The Mighty Magnificent 7 and The Soulful Seven, achieving a significant milestone with the signing of a five-year contract with MGM Records, appearing in the April 1970 issue of Teen Magazine, and performing on Aurthur Godfrey's "All American College Show" on three separate occasions. Later, he formed another band locally in St. Cloud, Minn., The Cloudy Towne Strutters, continuing his musical journey. No matter where life took him, the rhythm never left his soul. Neighbors, friends, and family would often find him in his garage sanctuary in front of a mixing board playing music with studio-quality sound into the late-night hours. Walter had a distinguished career in both aviation and sales. He worked as a sales manager for Combined Insurance and Van Dusen Aircraft Supplies, where he earned numerous top sales awards. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish World Aviation Services and World Airline Group, a business he passionately ran until his final days. His passion for aviation led him to attain his commercial pilot license, and numerable additional ratings and type ratings. Walter had one of the longest standing aircraft dealer licenses in the state of Minnesota. He was a worldly man traveling for business to the far parts of the world including Switzerland, Japan, South Africa, South America, and Canada. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of St. Cloud, the Center for Innovation at the University of North Dakota, and worked closely with the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences in Grand Forks, N.D., where his sons studied aviation and attended flight school. Walter married Cheryl A. Denney, having two cherished sons, David (Nikki) Moorhouse and Christian Moorhouse, both residing in Williston, ND. Though they later divorced, he remained a devoted father and grandfather to Kohen, Kenna, Carter, and Kiara. For the past 38 years, Walter shared his love and life with Mary Lou May, and her children, Angie (Wade) Keller of Prior Lake, Minn., and Stephanie (Tim) Sexton of Savage, Minn., along with grandchildren Ava, Bodhi, Luke, Kai, and Knox. Family and friends were of utmost importance to Walter, and his kindness and love were felt by many. He is also survived by his beloved brother Lawrence (Sandra) Moorhouse of Clearlake, Minn.; and nephews Mark, Shawn, and Matthew. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. A private ceremony will be held. The family would like to express deep appreciation to hospice care givers, Williams Dingmann Funeral Home of St. Cloud, and friends and neighbors that lent a shoulder or helping hand in their time of loss. From his sons: "Dad, with your wings now beneath you, push the throttle up, ease back on the stick, and give us your best and final rate of climb." |
