Paynesville Press - Oct. 27, 2010

Paynesville Area Hospital District Board of Directors
Zion Township
Donald Thomes

Donald Thomes, 56, has represented Zion Township on the hospital board for 18 years. He served as board chair for several years.

Why are you interested in serving on the hospital board? I have enjoyed my past service on the board and believe I can contribute for another term.

How can PAHCS recruit more providers, especially primary care physicians? Demand for primary care physicians is very high. To position ourselves for successful recruiting we need a growing health care facility, positive community support, and quality care, along with a thriving community environment.

Would you support a tax levy to build a new hospital in Paynesville? Before I could support a tax levy for a new hospital, a number of criteria would need to be met. 1. Is a new hospital clearly the best choice? 2. All financing options explored. 3. All possible grant money applied for. 4. All local charitable organizations support sought. 5. Philanthropy opportunities tapped. (Someone may wish to donate land or other donation opportunities.)

How important is it for PAHCS to remain an independent health care organization? What needs to be done to insure that PAHCS remains so? The only way to have local control of our health care organization is to remain independent. To remain independent, we need the support of our community, and we need to provide quality care in a timely fashion.

Remaining independent also requires a strong financial position. A wide range of services also needs to be provided to maintain a large customer base to support an independent system as not all operating efficiencies can be achieved on a smaller scale.
