In a field of mostly inner-city athletes, Trees won the youth division (14 and 15 year olds) in the high jump competition with a jump of 5’8” betting the old mark of 5’6”. He also won his heat of in the 100-meter dash and went on to qualify for the national meet in both events. The nationals were held in Des Moines, Iowa.
