Stars win twice,
extend win streak to three games

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team won two games last week to extend their winning streak to three games.

On Thursday, the Stars defeated Sartell/Sauk Rapids 4-1 in a Central Lakes Conference game in Sauk Rapids, and on Saturday, the Stars won a nonconference game against Rogers in Elk River 3-2.

Against Sartell/Sauk Rapids, the Stars broke open the game over a two-minute span at the end of the first period and the start of the second period. After 15 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Stars scored two goals in the final 75 seconds of the first period (with junior forward Greta Omann and ninth grade forward Megan Bergeson netting goals) and another goal (by ninth grade center Jenn Paul) in the first minute of the second period.

In two minutes, the game changed from a scoreless tie to a 3-0 Stars' lead. Junior forward Kenzie Novak scored for the Stars two minutes later in the second period, giving the Stars a 4-0 lead.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored their lone goal midway through the third period, making the final score 4-1.

Sophomore goalie Tracy Skluzacek stopped 22 of 23 shots for the Stars.

Against Rogers, sophomore forward Traci Thielen scored a power-play goal with eight seconds left to break a 2-2 tie and give the Stars the 3-2 win.

Rogers tied the game at 2-2 with just over two minutes left in the third period, but the Stars drew a power-play opportunity with 20 seconds to play. Thielen was fed in the slot by ninth grade forward Blythe Sjoberg and scored the winning goal on a wrist shot.

After a scoreless first period, the Stars took a 2-0 lead in the second period when sophomore defenseman Gina Athmann and sophomore forward Shannon Blomker scored back-to-back goals.

Rogers then scored a goal later in the second period to cut the Stars' lead to 2-1.

With the wins, the Stars improved their season record to 5-6. They are also 3-3 in Central Lakes Conference games.

This week, the Stars will play two games in Paynesville at the Koronis Civic Arena before taking a holiday break. On Tuesday night, the Stars hosted Fergus Falls at 7 p.m.; and on Thursday, the Stars will host Alexandria also at 7 p.m.
