The River Lake Stars Girl’s hockey team began practice on Nov. 3. Seventeen girls have gone out for the team in its inaugural year. The girls are from Cold Spring, Paynesville, and St. John’s Prep. The head coach is Valerie VanBeusekom and Warren Christie is the assistant coach.

At the end of the first week of practice, the team held a scrimmage in Buffalo, against a larger team with both a varsity and junior varsity. The team’s first game is Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., against Champlin Park at the River Lake Community Ice Arena in Richmond, which is were all home games will be played.

The team is very young with only one senior and two juniors. They also have the task of being the first ever girls hockey team for the River Lake Stars. Coach VanBeusekom doesn’t believe this will intimidate the girls though, saying the team is very excited about being recognized and being the pioneer team. She also believes there will be lots of improvement during the season because the girls have great attitudes. She hopes the team will have a great deal of fun this season.

The coach added that because girl’s hockey is still developing, it is very beneficial that the area formed a team now. With the interest in girls hockey becoming greater and greater each year, the team will grow in the next few years.
