Golfers fire season low 173 at Melrose

The Bulldogs enjoyed beautiful golfing weather for a pair of West Central Conference North meets last week. While the Bulldogs improved their team score, it wasn't enough to escape seventh place.

Albany was the team champion at the meet hosted by LPGE on Monday, May 1, and by Melrose on Tuesday, May 2. At each meet, the Huskies had three players shoot in the upper 30s.

Cathedral was second at both meets, Melrose was third, and LPGE was fourth. At LPGE, sophomore Nathan Glenz led the Bulldogs with a 41, followed by senior Ryan Wall with a 44. Adam Rafferty and Pat Spooner shot 48s, and seventh grader Mitchell Mackedanz shot 49 in his first varsity outing.

With a total of 181, the Bulldogs trailed sixth-place Litchfield by four strokes. Mark Brossard and Eric Gerding also played for the Paynesville varsity at LPGE.

At Melrose on Tuesday, the Bulldogs had their lowest team total of the season: 173. Wall shot 42, Rafferty 43, and Glenz and Spooner had 44.

The Bulldogs trailed Sauk Centre by four and Litchfield by six.

Brossard shot 49 for Paynesville, and Schmitt and Mackedanz rounded out the varsity lineup.

In the overall conference standings, Cathedral leads with 25 points. Albany is second with 24. Melrose is third with 20, and LPGE has 19. Litchfield has 11, Sauk Centre nine, and Paynesville four.

Sauk Centre tournament The Bulldogs were eighth in an 18-hole tournament at Sauk Centre on Saturday.

WCC North rivals dominated the meet. Albany won with a total of 325, Sauk Centre was second, and Litchfield was third. Four of the top five golfers were from WCC North teams.

The Bulldogs trailed seventh-place Melrose by 16 strokes.

Leading scorers for Paynesville were: Wall, 85; Glenz, 88; Rafferty, 98; and Mackedanz, 98.
