Dogs rip Rockford, continue hot start

The Bulldogs scored six runs in the first inning, built a 9-0 lead, and continued their hot start with a 12-4 victory over Rockford on Friday.

Rockford has eliminated the Dogs from the subsection playoffs the last two years, including 2-1 in extra innings last year.

Val Callenius pitched a complete game But the Dogs (5-1) showed their hitting prowess last week, getting 19 hits and scoring 12 runs. Senior Amber Chevalier, senior Ashley Spanier, junior Amanda Skalicky, and junior Allyson Klenke led the Dogs' attack with three hits apiece.

Senior Val Callenius pitched a complete game as the Dogs beat Rockford 12-4 on Friday for their fifth win this spring.

Senior Kim Hess singled to start the Dogs' first inning, and she scored on a triple by Spanier. Skalicky then delivered an RBI single. Junior Jess Engler had an RBI single in the inning, and Klenke had an RBI double. Rockford also committed two errors in the first inning.

In the second inning, the Dogs scored three more runs thanks to four hits - by Spanier, Skalicky (an RBI double), Engler, and Chevalier - and two more Rockford errors.

After Rockford cut the Dogs' lead to 9-3, Paynesville scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth inning. Skalicky singled, sophomore Chelsey Kalkbrenner doubled, senior Kayla Mackedanz had an RBI single, Chevalier had an RBI single, and Klenke singled in this rally.

Senior Val Callenius pitched a complete game to earn the pitching victory for Paynesville.

Amanda Skalicky This week, the Dogs will be busy. They played at Albany on Monday and at LPGE on Tuesday. On Thursday, they will host Sauk Centre, and on Friday they will travel to Dassel-Cokato. On Saturday, the Dogs will play in a tournament at Rocori.

Next week, the Dogs will host Albany on Tuesday, May 3.

Junior Amanda Salicky had three hits, including a double, as the Dogs pounded 19 hits and scored 12 runs in beating Rockford 12-4 on Friday.

Melrose 5, Paynesville 2
Melrose handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the spring 5-2 in a conference game in Paynesville on Tuesday, April 19.

Melrose scored a run in the first inning and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs, who only had four hits, had two runners thrown out trying to steal in the first inning and stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fifth.

The Dogs finally scored in the bottom of the sixth, with senior Amber Chevalier singling, senior Kim Hess walking, and senior Ashley Spanier singling to load the bases. But with the bases loaded and no one out, the Dogs scored only one run on a fielder's choice.

Melrose scored two more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 5-1.

The Dogs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh before their two-on, two-out rally ended on a hard liner back to the pitcher.
