Golfers edge Cathedral on tie-breaker

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville boys' golf team opened their season by taking fifth place at a West Central Conference North meet at Sauk Centre on Tuesday, April 8.

In sunny but cool weather, the Bulldogs tied with St. Cloud Cathedral with a four-golfer total of 190, but the Bulldogs took fifth place on the virtue of their fifth score.

Sophomore Mitchell Mackedanz led the Bulldogs by firing a round of 42, which tied for eighth. Three golfers tied for medalist honors with rounds of 40, and four golfers had rounds of 41.

Ninth grader Ross Barten shot 48 for Paynesville's second score, and senior Tony Savage and ninth grader Justin Bork had rounds of 50 for the Bulldogs. Senior Eric Gerding finished with 51, two better than the fifth score for Cathedral.

The West Central Conference North has only six teams this year, since Litchfield has left the conference and joined the Wright County Conference.

This week, the Bulldogs played in St. Cloud at a meet hosted by Cathedral on Monday. Next week, they will host a home conference meet at Koronis Hills on Tuesday, April 22, starting at 4:30 p.m.
