Irene Schmitt
Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake for Irene Schmitt, 82, who died Monday, July 27, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Irene was born in Brooten, Minn. to Anton and Barbara (Decker) Steinhoff. She married Martin Schmitt on Oct. 28, 1947, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waite Park. Irene was a sacristan for 45 years for the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Catholic Aid, and Christian Women.

Irene is survived by her children, Arlene Barthel of St. Joseph, Barbara Schmitt of Grand Lake, and Mary Sand of Avon; sisters, Susan Killeen of St. Paul, Ida Mazerus of St. Cloud, Margaret Gruber of California, and Lorraine Spier of Brainerd; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband on May 9, 1987; brothers, John, Alphonse, and Sylvester; and sisters, Veronica Esler and Mathilda Esler.

Marvin Reitmeier
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond for Marvin Reitmeier, 70, of Richmond, who died Wednesday, July 22, 1998. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Marvin was born in Munson Township to John and Othilia (Erkens) Reitmeier. He married Bernice Braegelmann on May 7, 1951, in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. The couple farmed three miles north of Richmond. Marvin was an insurance agent for Wakefield Insurance Company (Mid-Minnesota) since 1979. Marvin was a trustee and board member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Richmond, a school board member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Grade School, and a member of Catholic Aid. He was a chief ranger for the Catholic Order of Foresters and a grand knight for the Knights of Columbus. Marvin was also a supervisor for the Munson Township Board.

Marvin is survived by his wife; children, Shirley Keebler of Minneapolis, Mike of Cross Plains, Wis., Jean Kraus of Plymouth, Karen Brink of Eden Prairie, Kevin of St. Louis, Glen of Sioux City, Iowa, Kris Dockendorf of Cold Spring, and Greg of Omaha, Neb.; brothers, Fr. Abbot Placid of Mexico, and Howard of Richmond; sisters, Kathleen Henning of St. Cloud, Lorraine Schumacher of Aurora, Colo., and Vernice Boothe of Aurora, Colo.; and 21 grandchildren.

Serah Bertram
Serah K. Bertram, 85, of St. Martin, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. The Rev. Vincent Lieser, Rev. Gregory Lieser, and Rev. Michael Kwatera, OSB, officiated. Burial was in the St. Martin parish cemetery.

Serah (Lieser) was born on Sept. 20, 1912, in Lake Henry, Minn., to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Schoenhoff) Lieser. She married Leo Bertram on Sept. 22, 1936, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Lake Henry. They farmed in the St. Martin area since 1936.

She was a member of the St. Anne's Society, Christian Mothers, the St. Benedict's Society, the St. Martin Rosary Sodality, the St. Martin Catholic Aid Association, the Crosier Apostalates, and was a lifelong member of St. Martin Catholic Church.

Serah is survived by her children, Betty (Ernie) Dockendorf of Watkins, Wilfred (Janine) of St. Martin, Ralph of St. Martin, Florence (Ken) Groetsch of Sauk Centre, Donald of St. Martin, LeRoy of St. Martin, Jerome of St. Martin, Carol (Wayne) Rueter of Sauk Centre, Darlene (Jerry) Revermann of New Munich, and Mary Kay Bertram of Paynesville; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Victor (Imelda) Lieser of Paynesville, Henry (Marcella) of Paynesville, and Andrew (Bergetta) Lieser of Paynesville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Hilda Leukam, Dora Winter, and Thecla Spanier; and brothers, Edmund and Jacob Lieser.

William "Bill" Scheierl
William H. "Will" Scheierl, 73, of Paynesville, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. His son, the Rev. LeRoy Scheierl, officiated, along with the Rev. Richard Leisen. Entombment was in the St. Louis parish mausoleum in Paynesville, with full military honors provided by the Paynesville American Legion Post #271.

William was born on May 10, 1925, in Union Grove Township, to Blasius and Anne (Meyer) Scheierl. He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1945 to 1946. He married Clara Arnold on April 12, 1950, in Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley. They farmed in the Paynesville area since 1950. He was a member of the Paynesville American Legion Post #271, the St. Louis Knights of Columbus #3820, and he was a lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Clara of Paynesville; children, James (Cecelia) of Paynesville, Robert (Karen) of Grand Rapids, Minn., Donald of New London, Raymond (Mary Kay) of Forrest Lake, Debra (Robert) Schreifels of Sauk Rapids, Fr. LeRoy of Belgrade, Diane Scheierl of Waite Park, and Richard (Tina) of St. Cloud; ten grandchildren; siblings, John (Alice) of Paynesville, Marie (Roman) Lahr of Paynesville, Katherine (Elmer) Zirbes of Rockville, and Caroline (Matt) Lahr of Manannah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George, Sylvester, Joseph, Henry, Anton, and infant brother, William.

Margaret Kirchner
Margaret Kirchner, 86, of Melrose and formerly of Spring Hill, died Friday, July 24, at the Melrose Hospital. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. The Rev. Leo Leisen officiated, with burial following in the parish cemetery.

Margaret Kirchner was born May 18, 1912, in Spring Hill to Leonard and Anna (Riedel) Kirchner. She worked for many years as a cook at the school in Spring Hill and also cleaned at the church there. She lived at Roseview Manor in Melrose since 1994. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic church, the Christian Women of Spring Hill and the Mission Society.

Margaret is survived by her brother, Philip Kirchner of Park Rapids; sister, Mary Kirchner of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward, Arnold, Francis, and Leonard Kirchner Jr; sisters, Anna Aigner, Rose Hilger, and Theresia Kirchner.

Magdelene Kemper
Magdelene Kemper, 96, of Regal, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Thurs., July 23, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville, with Father Felix Fasching officiating. Interment was in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in rural Regal.

Magdelene Peters was born on Oct. 24, 1901, in Faribault, Minn. She was the daughter of Peter and Barbara (Biersdorf) Peters. After spending some time in North Dakota, Magdelene moved with her family to Spring Hill.

On June 5, 1928, she was married to Norbert Kemper in Regal. Following their marriage, they moved to Regal, where Magdelene was the U.S. Postmaster from 1938 to 1971. She retired at the age of 70 years. She was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Regal, as well as the Daughters of Isabella.

Magdelene is survived by her sons, Vernon (Pat) of Paso Robles, Calif., and Cletus (Sharon) of Grand Rapids, Minn.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Catherine Kuefler of Wadena; and one sister-in-law, Ann Peters of Belgrade.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norbert; infant twin children, Joseph and Mary; three brothers; and three sisters.

Eleanor Schultz
Eleanor M. Schultz, 75, of Paynesville, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. The Rev. Ric Koehn officiated. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Eleanor was born on Oct. 30, 1922, in Roscoe, Minn., to Nicholas and Anna (Weis) Schaefer. She married Allen Schultz on Dec. 11, 1951, at First Evangelical Church in Paynesville. She lived in Paynesville all of her married life. She was employed by Peifer Egg Packing Plant in Paynesville and later by Animal Fair in Eden Valley. She retired in 1987. She was member of Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Nick of Grove City, Debra Stanger of Paynesville, Linda Teicher of Eden Valley, and Steven of Paynesville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Delores Burklund of Phoenix, Ariz., Sally Alexander of St. Paul, and Marty Donatell of White Bear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 2, 1981; and one brother, Lawrence Schaefer.

William Ochs Sr.
William H. Ochs Sr., 82, of Paynesville, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at his home in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 1998, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. The Rev. Richard Leisen and Rev. Francis Garvey officiated. Entombment was in the St. Louis Parish Mausoleum in Paynesville.

William was born in Hosmer, S.D., on Feb. 24, 1916, to Sebastian and Phillipina (Reinbolt) Ochs. He grew up in Hosmer, and graduated from Central High School and Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen.

He married Katherine V. Decker on July 30, 1940, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aberdeen. He taught in South Dakota until 1946, when he began teaching and coaching at Aberdeen Central High School until 1960. There he coauthored the state's high school geometry text and was Teacher of the Year in 1947. They then moved to Bloomington, Minn., where he taught and coached until 1980.

After retirement, William continued to coach and substitute teach in both Atwater and Paynesville Area High Schools. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville.

William is survived by his wife, Katherine of Paynesville; children, Bonnie Peterson of Mesa, Ariz., Dennis of Paynesville, Thomas of Burnsville, William H. Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., and James of Paynesville; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and sister, Cecilia Moffenbeier of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Linda; brothers, Robert, Frank, Balzaar, and John; and sisters, Theresa Kiefer, Pauline Malsam, and Helen Jacob.

Leander Schiemann
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring for Leander Schiemann, 77, of Cold Spring, who died Friday, July 3, 1998, at his residence. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Leander was born in Genora, N.D., to John and Gertrude (Wenker) Schiemann. He married Dolores Weinman on Jan. 7, 1942, in Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. The couple farmed for 19 years in the Spring Hill area. Leander then worked for the past 35 years for Gopher Lumber Company in St. Cloud. Leander was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, the St. Joseph Men's Society, and Crosier Aposolate.

Leander is survived by his wife, Gertrude; children, Patricia Baird of St. Cloud, Ronald of Red Wing, Karen Walz of Elk River, Diana Cook of St. Cloud; John of Foley, and Kathy Kuechle of Cold Spring; brother, Richard of St. Paul; sister, Lorraine Felling of Litchfield; and 20 grandchildren.

Leander was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin, Bernard, and Arthur; sister Levina Beeberger; and infant sister, Mary.

Viola Wagner
Viola L. Wagner, 88, of Paynesville, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at the Paynesville Area Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. The Rev. Richard Leisen officiated. Burial was at the St. Louis Parish Cemetery in Paynesville.

Viola was born on July 27, 1909, in Leaf Valley, Minn., to Alfred and Mary (Peffer) Guenther. She married Bernard Wagner on Feb. 5, 1929, in Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Millerville. They farmed near Alexandria for seven years before moving to Osakis, where they farmed for another 13 year. They also farmed in the Freeport and Meire Grove areas before moving to Hawick in 1962. They retired to Paynesville in 1965. Bernard died on Dec. 31, 1985.

Viola was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Louis Christian Women, the Paynesville Area Senior Citizens and Mission Group.

Viola is survived by her sons, Bernard of Orlando, Fla, Leo (Kathy) of Minnetonka, Earl of Alexandria, Allen of Plymouth, Darrel (Roxsene) of Big Springs, Neb., Donald (Diane) of St. Louis Park, Myron (Becky) of Denver, Colo., Dennis (Debbie) of Blaine, Dean (Cheri) of Blaine, Ronald (Cheryl) of Hutchinson, and Jimmy (Donna) of Atwater; daughters, Erma Moorman of Melrose, Donna (Richard) Kemper of Bloomington, Joan (Ray) Wehlage of Coon Rapids, Annette (Carl) Stich of St. Joseph, Doris (Loren) Herzog of Brooklyn Center, Barb (Don) Peterson of St. Paul, Sharon (Tom) Lyons of Plymouth, and Joyce (Wayne) Anderson of Cosmos; 57 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; brothers, Clarence Guenther of Milwaukee, Wis., and Herb of Leaf Valley; sisters, Frances Hall of New Mexico, Olivia Ebel of New Mexico, and Irene Marcinski of Milwaukee, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard; brothers, William and Clifford Guenther; and grandson, Duane Wagner.

Cyrilla Dillon
Cyrilla D. Dillon, 76, of Paynesville, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 1998, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Father Richard Leisen officiated. Interment was in the St. Louis Parish Cemetery.

Cyrilla Delores Lieser was born on Nov. 19, 1921, in Lake Henry. She was the daughter of Adam and Anastacia (Miller) Lieser. Cyrilla grew up on a family farm near Lake Henry, where she attended a country school. In 1938 she graduated from Paynesville High School. She attended St. Benedict's College in St. Joseph for one year, and in 1943 she graduated from the St. Cloud Hospital with a registered nursing degree. During World War II, she served her country in the U.S. Navy as a nurse from 1943 to 1944.

On Oct. 17, 1944, Cyrilla was married to Frank Dillon in Bethesda, Md. Following their marriage, they lived in several Minnesota towns while Frank worked for the Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. In 1971 they moved to Paynesville, and the following year they started Cyrilla Beach Homes.

Cyrilla was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and the Paynesville American Legion Post #271. She was very active in church, where she was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She also was a member of the Book Lover's Club and card clubs. She was an active volunteer and Senior Citizen's member.

Cyrilla is survived by her husband, Frank of Paynesville; son, Dick of Paynesville; daughters, Mary (Robert) deRonnebeck of Lakeville, Jeanne Harding of Wayzata, and Ruth Ann (Pete) Hullett of Maple Grove; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Buddy (Genny) Lieser of Regal.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Ramona Sauer.

Marlys Nelson
Marlys Nelson, 73, of Paynesville, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 13, at Nordland Lutheran Church. The Rev. Keith Ainsley and Intern Betty Krafft officiated. Interment was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Marlys (Nehring) Nelson, the daughter of Marvin and Anna (Schmidt) Nehring, was born on March 26, 1925, in Paynesville. She grew up and attended school in Paynesville. Marlys was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Paynesville, and she was a member of Nordland Lutheran church at the time of her death.

On Oct. 2, 1947, Marlys was united in marriage to Louis C. Nelson at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Paynesville. Together they moved and made their home in Chicago, Ill., where Marlys worked as a bookkeeper. She also worked for 20 years for GTE. When her husband retired in 1977, they moved back to Paynesville and lived on Lake Koronis until 1990 when they moved into town.

Marlys is survived by her three aunts, Mabel (Seymour) Thompson of Paynesville, Selma Swanson of Paynesville, and Iris Lang of Minnesota; one uncle, Hilmer Schmidt of Corvallis, Oregon; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, on Dec. 26, 1996; her parents, Marvin and Anna Nehring; and one brother, Duane Nehring.
