Bulldogs lose to Litchfield in overtime

The Paynesville Bulldog football team played their first home game against the Litchfield Dragons on a perfect night: no wind and the temperature was just right. The Bulldogs found out later that this Friday the 13th would not be perfect for them.

The Bulldogs started off strong when the defense stopped the Dragons in three plays. Chris Dombrovski intercepted a pass and gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Dragons 33-yard line. From that point on, Dombrovski led the Paynesville defense. The offense took advantage of this turnover and converted it into a touchdown. Brandon Wensmann took the ball into the end zone on a four-yard run, but the extra point play was missed.

Dave Hemmesch, the starting quarterback, broke his upper left arm as he fell to the ground. Hemmesch did not return for the entire game. Backup quarterback Tony Hoffman received a golf ball injury Friday in P.E. and was unable to play against the Dragons. The position fell to third string quarterback Casey Meagher.

The Bulldog defense again stopped the Dragons when they had the ball and forced them to punt. When the Bulldogs got the ball back, Meagher led the Bulldogs and did a fine job under the existing conditions.

His first drive stalled, but on Paynesville's next drive he took the Bulldogs into the end zone and helped convert the extra point which put the Bulldogs up by 14 points. The Dragons started driving towards the end of the first half but the defense came up with a big play. They stopped the Dragons on the 1-yard line and prevented a Dragon touchdown.

The second half was a much different story. Litchfield came out motivated and stopped the Bulldogs for the rest of the night. The offense could not get started. The Dragon offense did, scoring twice in the third quarter and tying the game. Both offenses struggled in the fourth quarter and the defenses started taking over. The Bulldogs again made a goal line stand when the Dragons started off at Paynesville's 30-yard line and marched to the 5 where they were stopped. The Bulldogs took over and ran the time out.

In overtime, each team has 4 plays from the ten yard line to score. The Dragons scored on their first possession but missed the extra point. The Bulldogs then got the ball but failed to score. They lost 20-14.

The Bulldogs' next game is at Melrose on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
