PHS football teams wins season opener 38-20

With a victory over Big Lake on the Bulldog's home turf, August 28 marked the successful start of Paynesville Area High School's 1997 football season with new head coach, Kyle Nehowig. Despite Big Lake's early lead, the Bulldogs fought back, gaining a six point lead by halftime, and defending their territory to a final score of 38-20.

Seth Elmhorst, Noah Bruntlett, and Bret Aagesen were Paynesville's leading scorers, with quarterback, David Hemmesch, two for eight in passing for 34 yards.

Paynesville rushed for 378 yards and passed for 34, amassing a total of 412 yards during Thursday's game, compared to just 263 for Big Lake. The Bulldogs successfully held Big Lake to 68 yards rushing for the game.

The Bulldog's leading tacklers were Tony Hoffman with six solos and two assists, Bill Stanger with four solos and two assists, Seth Elmhorst with three solos and two assists, and Dustin Looman with four solos and two assists.
