Regal squeaked out a win over Cannon Falls by a score of 3-2 in Glencoe on Sunday in the first round of the Class C Amateur State Baseball Tournament .
The game was a pitcher's duel through the fifth inning, with only one hit which was a single by Mike Beier in the first inning. In the top of the sixth, Cannon Falls posted two unearned runs to lead 2-0. Regal had put only the minimum twenty-one batters to the plate after seven innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning-Regal's inning-Chad Hess led off and reached first after being hit by a pitch. Cannon Falls tried a set play where the pitcher fakes that he is in a full wind-up hoping that the runner will try to steal second. The pitcher then backs off the mound and throw out the runner. This did work partially. In the eventual run-down, Cannon Falls threw the ball over one of their player' heads allowing Hess to reach second base.
The next Regal batter, Jeff Deming, then hit a home run to tie the game at 2-2.
Cannon Falls went scoreless in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, with one out, Mike Beier singled and went to third on Tim Haines' single. Ron Fuchs came to bat, and with the outfield drawn in, singled over the outfielder's head to score Beier for the winning run.
Tim Haines started for Regal and Mike Beier relieved in the eighth inning and got the win. Robert Burr went eight innings for Cannon Falls and took the loss.
Leading hitters for Regal were Mike Beier 2-4 with a run; Tim Haines and Ron Fuchs went 1-4, and Fuchs had an RBI; Jeff Deming went 1-3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs; and Chad Hess went 0-2 with a run.
