Roscoe Legion wins Stearns County championship

Roscoe defeated Spring Hill 5-0 last Tuesday evening to win the Stearns County Legion League championship. This is the first Legion championship for Roscoe since 1982 and the first one in Art Schlangenís 14 years of coaching.

After the championship game in Roscoe, individual trophies were presented to the Roscoe team for taking first in the playoffs. Team plaques were also presented to Spring Hill for second in the playoffs, and St. Martin for placing first in the league. The trophies were sponsored by the Lake Henry Legion and presented by their president, Chuck Hennen, and Art Schlangen, league president and secretary.

Roscoe ends their 1997 season with a 9-4 overall record, 6-4 in the league and 3-0 in the playoffs.

Spring Hill 0

Roscoe and Spring Hill played a close game, 1-0, into the fourth inning last Tuesday night in Roscoe for the Stearns County Legion League championship. Roscoe blew the game open with four runs in the fourth to win 5-0.

Brent Heinen scored the only run for Roscoe in the first when he reached base on an error, stole third, and scored on Todd Leyendeckerís single.

Roscoeís four runs in the fourth came on a walk to Robert Leyendecker with one out, a single by Doug Utsch which put runners on first and second. Ben Bork singled to score Leyendecker and put runners on first and third. Heinen hit a sacrifice fly to score Utsch. Chris VanderBeek hit an RBI triple, followed by Todd Leyendecker with his third hit of the game to score the final run.

Chris VanderBeek got the win for Roscoe. He gave up only four hits and struck out two. Rick Lieser took the loss for Spring Hill.
