Regal beats Sauk Centre for region title

Regal had a two-run lead over Sauk Centre after one inning.


Regal clinched the championship of Region 15C on Sunday with a 14-8 win over Sauk Centre.

Both Regal and Sauk Centre will advance to the Class C state tournament, which begins this weekend in Glencoe. Regal will play the runner-up from Region 5C at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Regal had 18 hits for the game and a 10-run third inning to lead 12-0, a lead they never reliquished. Sauk Centre made a try in the seventh scoring four runs and again in the top of the ninth with three runs, but it wasnŕt enough.

Mike Beier was the winning pitcher, working five innings. Jon Kane was the losing pitcher for Sauk Centre.

Leading hitters for Regal were Ron Fuchs who hit his club-record 14th home run for the season in the first inning. Fuchs was 3-4 with 3 runs, 2 RBIs, and a 2 run homer. Chad Hess, a draftee from Melrose, hit his second home run for Regal . He went 3-3 with 2 runs, 4 RBIs, a double and a 2-run homer. Mike Tangen went 3-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Tim Haines went 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Jeff Deming and Mike Beier went 2-3. Beier also had 3 RBIs. Steve Fleck went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.
