Star of the North games

The Paynesville varsity girls basketball team played in the Star of the North Games over the weekend.

Paynesville played four games, winning three. They played Apple Valley, Wabasso, LeSueur, and Hayfield.

The team members that played were Steph Krupke, Tanya Lieser, Cindy Lang, Carin Frenchick, Jamie Wuertz, Tiffany Rausch, Amber Michaelis, and Carrie Hemmesch. The coach was Cameron Mahlum.

Paynesville 43
Apple Valley 34

Paynesville defeated Apple Valley in their opening round game 43-34.

In the game Paynesville played great defense and they rebounded the ball well.

Tanya Lieser led all Paynesville scorers with 12.


Paynesville 35
Wabasso 32

Paynesville defeated Wabasso in their second round game 35-32.

The Bulldogs had 15 points in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Tanya Lieser had six fourth quarter points and Amber Michaelis made four consecutive free throws gave Paynesville the win.

Paynesville 44
LeSueur 18

Paynesville defeated LeSueur 44-18 in their third round game.

They once again played good defense and held LeSueur to just seven second half points.

Amber Michaelis led with 14 points and Tanya Lieser had 12.


Hayfield 58
Paynesville 43

Paynesville lost their fourth round game to Hayfield 58-43.

Paynesville was down 25-22 at the half but came out ready to play in the second half, scoring the first five points of the half.

However, Hayfield regained the lead at the end of the third 41-37.

In the fourth, Hayfield pulled away, but Paynesville gave it a good strong effort, against a very strong Hayfield team.
