Atwater 10
Paynesville 6

Paynesville lost to Atwater 10-6, Friday night, in Atwater.

Nate Schutz started on the mound for Paynesville only giving up two earned runs. T.J. Schultz came in relief and gave up three runs in one inning of work, but he struck out three batters and didn’t give up a single hit.

Eric Hartfiel led Paynesville in hitting going 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Schutz also went 2-4 with an RBI.

Paynesville got on the board first by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Shaun Fleischhacker led off with a single, followed by another single by Schultz. They both stole on a double steal and Paynesville had runners on second and third with nobody out. Hartfiel then got a hit that drove them in and he later scored on a passed ball.

Paynesville added to their lead when Hartfiel and Schutz had base hits to lead off the third. With runners at the corners the Atwater pitcher balked allowing Hartfiel to score and Schutz to move up to second. Then Chad Fleischhacker delivered a base hit to drive in Schutz and Paynesville had a 5-0 lead.

Atwater didn’t roll over and die though. They added three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-3, Paynesville.

Paynesville added one more in the fourth, and the score was 6-3.

Atwater came back, scoring four in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-6, Atwater.

They also added three more in the sixth to take a 10-6 lead and hold on to win the game.

“Schutz pitched really well. He had his curve ball working. It was also good to get T.J. some work,” said coach Brad Skoglund. “If we would have gotten a few breaks, we would have won the game.”

Paynesville played Monday night against St. Joseph, and will play tomorrow at Holdingford and Friday against Kimball at home at 8 p.m.
