Legion team splits with Cold Spring

Paynesville defeated Cold Spring 3-2 in eight innings, in the first game of a doubleheader Monday night, June 8, in Paynesville.

Nathan Schutz started on the mound, with Jon Lieser and Garret Williams throwing relief. Williams earned the win.

Chris Loesch led the offensive attack going 2-3 with an RBI. Dustin Looman contributed an RBI also for Paynesville.

Cold Spring got out to an early lead by getting one run in the second inning, but Paynesville came right back scoring two in the bottom of the third.

After that the pitchers took over. Schutz only gave up four hits and left the game with a 2-1 lead.

Cold Spring was able to get one run off of Lieser in the top of the seventh, to tie the game at two.

Williams then came in and kept Cold Spring scoreless in the eighth and Paynesville was able to get the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.

In the second game it was Cold Springís turn to win as they defeated Paynesville 12-6.

Tyler Wuertz started for Paynesville. He went two innings, but only gave up one run on one hit. Dustin Looman then came in and he also went two innings, but he gave up eight runs on six hits. However, only two of Loomanís runs were earned, because Paynesville committed five fielding errors.

Garret Williams threw the fifth inning, and he gave up three runs walking four and striking out two.

Paynesville jumped out to an early lead scoring three in both of the first and second innings to take an early 6-1 lead.

However, Cold Spring came to play scoring five in the third to tie the game at six.

Cold Spring never looked back after that, scoring three runs a piece in the last two innings to win the game 12-6.

Roscoe 17
New Munich 0

Roscoe defeated New Munich 17-0 in their first legion game held in Roscoe.

Eric Kunstleben started for Roscoe and Brent Heinen came in to pitch relief. Kuntsleben went three innings giving up one hit and no runs while walking three and striking out two. Heinen struck out 12 of the 16 batters he faced and didnít give up a hit in four innings.

Chris Vanderbeek led the way offensively for Roscoe going 2-4 with a three-run home run.

Roscoe, 1-0, will play at Richmond on Thursday night, and St. Martin Tuesday, June 23, in Roscoe at 6:45 p.m.

Junior Legion
The Paynesville Junior Legion baseball team placed fifth in the Paynesville Tournament held on Saturday.

In the first game they faced Minnewaska and they were defeated. Then they faced Pipestone and they lost to Pipestone also. They then defeated Avon, to get fifth.

Minnewaska went on to win the tournament.

Paynesville has a game against Litchfield today, in Litchfield. They will then play in Alexandria for the tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
