After making 4'10", the bar was raised to 5' where Michaelis cleared this with no problem. The bar was advanced to 5'2" where she missed all three attempts.
Ten girls cleared the 5'2" height showing how strong the competition was in this event. When the bar was raised to 5'4", only two jumpers were able to clear the height.
Jena Cox (the Section 5A champion) won the state championship, based on misses over Traci Copeland, Breck, both going out at 5'5".
The section we are in won the Class A high jump for the fifth consecutive year, starting with Tiffany Karsch, Paynesville, in 1993 and then Carrie Braness, Litchfield, winning three straight years (1994 to 1996).
As a sophomore, Michaelis had an outstanding season winning the Sub Section 20 championship and was runner-up in Section 5A to the state champion Jena Cox.
Michaelis is the daughter of Dick and Linda Michaelis, Paynesville.
Junior Dan Johnson placed sixth in his heat in the 8 00-meter run but did not quality for the finals. He is the son of Dick and Carol Johnson.
