The Paynesville Legion baseball team just opened their season on Monday night in Cold Spring.

The team closed out last season by finishing third in the American Legion State Baseball Tournament. The tournament last year was held in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Paynesville lost a lot of players from last yearís team, but this year they could return by making a strong run at it late in the season.

In the state tournament the team faced Madison, La Crescent, and Tracy-Milroy. They defeated Madison in the first round and lost in the second round to the eventual champion La Crescent. But in the third place game, Paynesville defeated a strong Tracy-Milroy team, and was able to hang onto third place.

ďIt was a great season last year, great weekend up in Hibbing, and we played great baseball and had a lot of fun,Ē said Paynesville Coach Brad Skoglund.

This season Paynesville has many new faces on the team. They are a lot younger, but they could be just as good. Some of the players returning to the legion team this season are Bret Aagesen, Dustin Looman, Brent Heinen, Chad Fleischhacker, Ben Bork, Garret Williams, Nathan Shutz, and Eric Hartfiel.

ďLooking forward to this season, we are young, but we have a good ball club,Ē said Skoglund. ďThe key this year will be to get good pitching.Ē
