PHS baseball team wins own tourney

Paynesville hosted a three-team tournament on Saturday, May 2, winning the championship.

In the first game, Paynesville played Braham, winning 10-0. The Bulldogs faced Eagle Valley in the championship, winning 9-4.

Braham
PHS pitcher Brent Heinen gave up only one hit in the game against Braham and struck out six in five innings.

Leading the hitting for Paynesville was Ben Bork, 3 for 3 with 3 runs and 1 RBI; and Dustin Looman, 2 for 2 with 2 runs, and 3 RBI.

Eagle Valley
In the championship game, Paynesville defeated Eagle Valley 9-4.

"Tyler Wuertz threw well in the championship game. Throughout the tournament, we didn't walk one batter," coach Brad Skoglund said. "The team is finally getting ahead of the hits."

Leading the hitting for Paynesville was Bret Aagesen, 3 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBI; Chad Fleischhacker, 2 for 4 with 1 RBI; Chris VanderBeek, 1 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBI; and Dustin Looman, 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Litchfield
Paynesville hosted the Litchfield Dragons under the lights Friday night, losing 5-3.

"We had some chances to pull out a win, but left the runners on base," coach Skoglund said. "The team enjoyed playing in front of a nice crowd."

Skoglund added David Hemmesch threw a good ball game. "Litchfield is a better team than last year. They made a lot of good plays."

Leading the hitting for the Bulldogs were Brent Heinen and Ben Bork, 1 for 4, each with a run.

Melrose
On April 30, Paynesville hosted the Melrose Dutchmen, only to lose 14-2 in five innings.

"Melrose is a good hitting team all the way through the line-up," coach Skoglund said. "They have an outstanding team, one of the best in the conference."

Leading the hitting for the Bulldogs were Bret Aagesen, Chris Soine and Josh Erickson, all were 1 for 3.

Sauk Centre
On April 28, Paynesville traveled to Sauk Centre, bringing home a 6-3 victory.

"Brent Heinen threw a good game with 10 strike-outs. This was our first road win of the season," coach Skoglund said.

Leading the Bulldog hitting was Josh Erickson, Chris Soine, and Brent Heinen, all were 2 for 4.
