PHS baseball team loses in first round of sub sections

Paynesville defeated LPGE, 9-0, in their final conference game on Monday, May 18, in Long Prairie.

David Hemmesch and Brent Heinen pitched for Paynesville. Hemmesch went four innings only giving up two hits and no earned runs. Heinen came in relief, after a rain delay, and threw three innings of no hit baseball. Heinen struck out five batters.

Bret Aagesen led Paynesville in hitting going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hemmesch also went 2-4 driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs.

"We played very well tonight," said coach Brad Skoglund. "We had good pitching and turned a nice double play, started by Heinen."

Skoglund also added that Paynesville was able to get timely hitting and scored a few two-out runs.

Swanville
Paynesville suffered a season ending defeat to Swanville, 4-1, in the first round of the playoffs, Thursday, in Swanville.

Brent Heinen pitched for Paynesville giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out 11 in seven innings of work.

Nate Olson pitched for Swanville holding the Bulldogs to just one run and five hits in the game. Olson came into the game unbeaten during the season.

Bret Aagesen led the Bulldogs in hitting going 2-3 with Paynesvilleâs only RBI.

"We played well," said Paynesville coach Brad Skoglund. "It was disappointing to lose in the first round though."

Paynesville did play pretty well, only committing two fielding errors in the game, however, Swanville was just as tough.

"This was a good group of kids to work with," said Skoglund.

Skoglund also said that the Bulldogs improved especially defensively as the season progressed.
