Golf teams opened the season on Tuesday

The Paynesville Area High School boys and girls golf teams began their outside season last week with practices at the Koronis Hills Driving Range. After making trips to the Golf Dome in St. Cloud earlier in the spring, this was a welcome change for the players.

Both squads return a strong nucleus of players and will be shooting for improving their finishes in the conference.

The girls team finished third in the Sub-Section meet last season, missing their second straight Section appearance by only four strokes. Mary Frandson qualified for the state tournament last year as a sophomore. With the top four golfers returning from that team, Mary Frandson, Rachael Larson, Lynn Stoneburner and Mackenzie Merrill, hopes are high for the girls team to return to the Section this spring.

The boys team will have big shoes to fill with the graduation of all-conference and Section qualifier Jeff Meyer. Ryan Mackedanz, a Section qualifier as an eighth grader, will anchor a young team for the Bulldogs. They will be pushing hard to challenge perennial state competitors Albany and Sauk Centre.

Members of the girls team are: Rachael Larson, Mary Frandson, Lynn Stoneburner, Mackenzie Merrill, Angie Jensen, Erin OíFallon, Katie Wright, Sally Heitke, Maria Janotta, and Melinda Norris.

Members of the boys team are: Matt Brossard, Ryan Stoneburner, James Gulbranson, Ryan Mackedanz, Josh Ryan, John Manthei, Sean Kruger, Ryan Wall, Mark Brossard, Ryan Frank, Joey Koshiol, Adam Ryan and Corey Schmitt.
