Four individuals win state wrestling medals

The Bulldogs had five individuals who participated in the state tournamentĖTim Roberg, Ryan Stoneburner, Zach Welle, Jesse Spates, and Lee Hiltner. Paynesville took home second, third, fourth, and fifth place medals for individuals.

Ryan Stoneburner at 130 won his first match by a score of 8-1, but then lost his next match to Kyle Rose of Morris. In the wrestlebacks, Stoneburner lost and was eliminated from the tournament.

At 125 Tim Roberg brought home the third place medal. Roberg won his first match by a score of 8-0 over Tucker Polz of HLOL-Jackson. In the quarterfinals, Roberg lost to Jeremy Nagel of Blue Earth 4-3. In the wrestlebacks Roberg won his first match over Mike Zimmerman of Morris Area by a score of 4-0. He pinned his next opponent, Branden McGrath of Plainview/Elgin-Millville, and then won with a 5-1 decision over Scott Bauer of New Prague. Roberg faced Judd Evans of Deer River/Northland in the match for third place and won 11-0 to earn his third place.

Roberg is the only Paynesville wrestler to go to the state tournament as an individual four years in a row.

At 160 Zach Well brought home a fifth place medal. Welle won his first match by a pin, but then lost in a fall to Matt Kraft of HLOL-Jackson.

In the wrestlebacks Welle won his first match by a tech fall 17-2 over Eric Thesing of LaCrescent. He then won 12-3 over over Daren Goeden of Battle Lake/Underwood/Henning.

After losing the next round 5-2 to Jesse Jennissen of Staples-Motley, Welle won his final match to take fifth place. Ryan Frank of Blue Earth Area was Welle's opponent in the final match and a hard fought battle it was. The match went into overtime with Welle winning 7-5.

189 Jesse Spates won his first match by a score of 12-4 over Bernie Winkels of Stewartville. Spates also won his next match by a 10-4 decision over Jason Jacobson of Milaca/Faith Christian, but then lost to the eventual state champ, Jake Tietje of Fairmont/Martin Luther, 5-4.

In the wrestlebacks Spates won his first match 5-3 in overtime over Rick Johnson of Tracy Milroy, but then lost his third place match 3-2 to Erik Johnson of Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena, a wrestler who had defeated him in team competition also, and took fourth place as an individual.

Defending state champion at heavyweight, Lee Hiltner won his first match by a pin in 3:08 over Mike Undem of Mora. Then Hiltner defeated David Keizer of St. Michael-Albertville, 6-5, in the second round to put him in the semi-finals.

Hiltner faced Ryan Halverson of Sibley East in the semis and won in a very close match, 3-2 in double overtime, to put him into the championship match Saturday afternoon.

In the final and championship match, Hiltner faced a tough, strong opponent in Justin Staebler of Perham. Staebler defeated Hiltner 5-1 for the Class AA heavyweight title.

Hiltner's high school wrestling career ends with a second place this year and a state championship in 1996.
