Boys hockey: Tie with Marshall

This article submitted by Kurt Habben on 2/3/98.

The River Lakes Stars took on Marshall Saturday, Jan. 31, in Richmond. The Stars were looking to avenge a 4-2 loss earlier in the season against the independent Marshall, instead the two teams tied 1-1.

The Stars fought even harder in the third period to erase their goose egg. With just over a minute to play, Aaron Nietzke took a pass from Nathan Becker, skated untouched to the front of the goal and ringed a shot to the upper left corner to score. The last minute of play was intense, but neither team managed to score.

The overtime period that followed was the fourth overtime for the Stars. All previous overtimes resulted in wins, so the Stars were optimistic about their chances. Each team had its chances to score, including two breakaways for the Stars, but the game ended a 1-1 tie.

River Lakes: 0 0 1 0 - 1
Marshall: 1 0 0 0 - 1
