Boys basketball fall to 4-13 for the season

The Bulldogs lost to BBE for the second time this season, 68-57, on Monday, Feb. 10, in BBE.

Paynesville was led by Mike Stalboerger with 15 points, Grant Bowden with 14, and Eric Werlinger, who scored 10 off the bench.

In the first meeting with BBE, Jeff Zenner hit a last second shot that gave the Jaguars the victory. This time, however, Zenner couldn't play much because of a broken wrist. The result remained the same though, as BBE went on to win.

At the start of the second, it was Paynesville's turn to take the lead, as Werlinger scored eight in the second quarter alone. However, the rest of the team only scored four in the half, and BBE claimed the lead, 28-25.

Paynesville had a slow third quarter, only scoring 11 points, and BBE extended their lead to 42-36 at the end of the third.

In the fourth, BBE scored 16 points on free throws alone. The Bulldogs made it a game though, staying within five until the final few seconds.

Cathedral
The Bulldogs lost their second game of the weeon Thursday night in Paynesvillek, this time the loss was to St. Cloud Cathedral, 41-39 .

The Bulldogs only scored seven first half points, and only two in the first quarter. The second quarter wasn't much better for Paynesville. They only scored five. Cathedral scored 13 to extend their lead to 24-7 in the half.

The second half was a completely different story. The Bulldogs scored 19 points and held Cathedral to seven. At the end of the third, Paynesville was down 31-26.

The fourth quarter started off like the last one finished. The Bulldogs scored 13 and Mike Stalboerger scored five, including three clutch free throws after being fouled while attempting to make a three pointer.

Paynesville had a chance to tie with four seconds remaining. Grant Bowden attempted a three pointer that hit the back of the rim, but before Paynesville could tip it in the buzzer sounded.

Melrose
The Bulldogs lost their third consecutive basketball game to Melrose, 55-53, on Saturday afternoon in Paynesville.

The Bulldogs were led by Joe Bergstrom with 17 points. Bergstrom also had 10 rebounds to give him his second double-double of the season. Ross Jenniges, despite a sprained ankle, scored 11 points.

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Bulldogs won 62-48 in Melrose. Melrose was 0-7 in the conference.

During Saturday's meeting, Paynesville came out clicking both offensively and defensively. They were able to remain patient with the ball and play good solid defense, holding Melrose to nine points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs extended their lead. The score at the half was 27-21, Paynesville.

In the third quarter Melrose got hot, hitting five three pointers. Despite struggling in the third, Paynesville still retained a one-point lead, 39-38, heading into the fourth.

Melrose stayed hot though, hitting three more three pointers. Down the stretch the Bulldogs seemed to tire out, and they lost their lead late in the fourth at 51-48. Paynesville tried to regain it and pulled within two at the end, but it wasn't enough.

The Bulldogs are now 4-13, and have lost 10 of their last 11 games.
