Hiltner will wrestle in Sweden this summer

Paynesville Area High School graduate Lee Hiltner, Belgrade, will be heading to Sweden in April as part of the Minnesota/USA Cultural Exchange Trip to the Scandinavian championships.

Twenty wrestlers and four adults will be traveling to Sweden to compete against freestyle and Greco opponents. Three years ago, Hiltner traveled to Russia on a similar exchange program.

A freshman at Ridgewater Community College, Willmar, he will be wrestling at 190 pounds. Hiltner ended his high school wrestling career with a 124-32 record. In 1996, he placed first in the 190-pound weight class and in 1997, finished second.

Last summer he competed in the Minnesota/USA wrestling program going undefeated until the national competition in July. At the nationals, Hiltner finished 22-4 over a four-day period.

Hiltner was named Minnesota Junior Wrestler of the Year in 1996 and 1997. In 1995, Hiltner competed as a cadet national in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling competitions. He placed fourth at the nationals in freestyle and fifth in Greco; in 1996 at the junior nationals, he finished sixth in Greco and at the Espoir nationals, second in Greco and seventh in freestyle. Last year, 1997, at the junior nationals he placed fifth in freestyle and seventh in Greco.

Hiltner is the son of Sylvester and Linda Hiltner, rural Belgrade.
