Virg Vagle, Paynesville head wrestling coach for 31 years, set a new state record over the weekend.

Vagle is the only high school coach to pass the 500 win milestone. A year ago, Vagle surpassed the winningest coach mark by passing Ron Malcolmís, Anoka, record of 463 wins.

Vagle started the 1997-98 wrestling season with a 487-98-4 record. At the Eastview tournament in Apple Valley on Saturday, Vagle became the first wrestling coach in state history to get 500 wins. He ended the weekend with a 502-101-4 record.

ďItís a nice achievement,Ē Vagle said. ďBut itís more a reflection on the wrestlers, their families and my assistants.Ē
