Gymnasts beaten on final rotation
Maple Lake defeated the Paynesville gymnastics team 118.1 to 114.05 on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Maple Lake.|
The Dogs beat the Irish on the bars by five hundreths of a point, were edged on the vault by two tenths of a point, and were beaten on the floor by a point, trailing by 1.2 points entering their last event (balance beam). But Maple Lake outscored the Dogs by three points on the beam and won the nonconference meet by four points.
"This was a close meet. We were 1.2 points behind them going into the last rotation. We just couldn't stay on the beam," said coach Deb Nehowig. "That was a season low for us on beam."
Sophomore Kacy Nehowig led the Dogs by winning the vault (8.75), bars (8.05), floor (8.5), and the all-around competition (32.15). She was also third on the beam.
Eighth grader Anna Kotten was second on the vault (8.35) and the bars (7.85) to give the Dogs a 1-2 sweep on those events. She finished third in the all around (29.65).
Nehowig was the only gymnast to place for Paynesville on the beam and floor exercise.
This meet was the last for Paynesville before the holiday break. Next week, the gymnasts will travel to Litchfield on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
