Three-goal third lifts Stars to first victory

By Michael Jacobson

Three third-period goals lifted the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team to their first victory of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 18, against Pequot Lakes at the Koronis Civic Arena. The Stars won 4-3, getting 49 saves from sophomore goalie Blake Theisen.

Each team scored in the first period and the game remained knotted at 1-1 until the seesaw third period. River Lakes took a 2-1 lead two minutes into the period on a goal by freshman wing Andy Schramel, assisted by sophomore wing Mike Anderson.

Pequot Lakes tied the game at 2-2 with seven and a half minutes to play and took a 3-2 lead with just under six minutes to play.

The Stars avoided defeat, though, by getting a power play goal from junior center Kyle Curran 40 seconds later. He was assisted by Anderson and junior defenseman A.J. Bohlman.

Junior forward Matt Eickhoff scored the game-winning goal with just over three minutes to play, with assists going to senior wing Mike Stang and senior captain Darren Stommes, a defenseman.

Pequot Lakes held the game's longest lead, scoring a minute into the game. The Stars didn't get an equalizer until three minutes were left in the first period when senior wing Derek Dahlen scored assisted by senior forwards Mike Heinen and Andrew Schmitt.

Pequot Lakes outshot the Stars 52-25, but Theisen made more than twice as many saves as his Pequot Lakes counterpart.
