Stars split shutouts last week

The River Lake Stars girls team had an even week with a shutout win against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and a shutout loss against Brainerd.

The Stars played at Litchfield on Tuesday, Dec. 14, and won, 1-0. The Stars started out slow and had some troubles with the game.

It took the Stars awhile to get their goal, but they worked hard in the second period and were rewarded for it. The goal was scored by senior center Kari Turkowski, assisted by Melissa Jungels.

Because the Stars were only up by one goal, they knew that they had to score again or keep Litchfield from scoring. They held Litchfield scoreless and ended the game with a close score of 1-0.

Stars goalie Shari Vogt stopped all 25 shots from LDC, giving Vogt another shutout in goal.

The Stars played Brainerd at home last Thursday and lost 2-0, which was hard for the Stars. "Brainerd was an important conference game and it would have helped if we would have won," said coach Tom Petroski.

The first period was an even match as both teams fought for the puck, and play was even in both zones. But, right away, Brainerd was outshooting the Stars. Both teams had chances to score on the power play.

In the second period, Brainerd scored with little time remaining, giving the Stars some competition. Both offense and defense had their strong points, such as strong shots and stickhandling, or playing as a team.

The third period was a heart breaker as Brainerd flipped in another goal, with about five minutes left in the period. Even though they lost, the Stars played strong to the end. "We just need to put together all the things and skills that we do well into one game," said Petroski.

The Stars were outshot by Brainerd 23-7, with Vogt making 21 saves in goal.

The Stars had another important Central Lakes Conference game yesterday against St. Cloud Apollo.

The Stars will play next week in Blaine for their 1999 Minnesota Girls' Holiday Cup from Dec. 27-29. The Stars first game will be on Monday at 5 p.m. against North St. Paul.

Their second round opponent will be either Cambridge-Isanti or Richfield. If they win their first match, they will play Tuesday at 7 p.m. If they lose, they will play at 3 p.m.
