Bulldogs swept at holiday tournament

The Bulldogs girls' basketball team lost two games at a holiday tournament at Watertown-Mayer on Friday and Saturday, losing 56-32 to Watertown-Mayer on Friday and 68-43 to Maple Lake on Saturday.

Against Watertown-Mayer, the Dogs fell behind 25-12 at the half and then were outscored 17-5 in the third quarter. The Dogs did score 15 points in the fourth quarter, cutting the final margin to 56-32.

Junior guard Ashley Lieser led the Dogs against Watertown-Mayer, making two three-pointers and scoring 10 points. She also had seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Senior Brittany Lieser added seven points and 11 rebounds.

On Saturday, Maple Lake scored 37 points in the first half, building a 20-point lead at the half, and defeated the Dogs 68-43.

Senior guard Kim Hess led the Dogs with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

"We came out flat in both games and couldn't get it going," said coach Jackie Parsley. "The break will help us regroup."

The Dogs (1-7) do not play again until after the holiday break.

LPGE 39, Paynesville 38
The Bulldogs' rally against LPGE fell one point short in a conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 14, with the Dogs falling 39-38.

After trailing 20-19 at the half, LPGE scored 15 points in the third quarter to take a 34-27 lead. The Dogs rallied in the final quarter, outscoring LPGE 11-5, but the Dogs missed two free throws with a second left, missing a chance to win or tie, and lost by one.

"Free throws hurt us. We had more shot attempts; now we need to make the shots," said Parsley. "The girls played great. It was the best four quarters I have seen them play so far this season."

The Dogs (0-3 in the West Central Conference North) were led by Brittany Lieser with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
