Stars rally for 3-3 draw with Sartell/Sauk Rapids

Senior Marie Omann completed her hat trick by scoring the tying goal with a minute and a half to play as the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team drew with Sartell/ Sauk Rapids 3-3 on Thursday night in Richmond.

Omann scored the first two goals of the game, first two minutes into the game and then midway through the first period as the Stars took a 2-0 lead. But Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored seconds after Omann's second goal to cut the lead to 2-1.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored the only goal late in the second period to tie the score 2-2 and scored four minutes into the final period to take a 3-2 lead.

Omann's third goal with 1:26 to play tied the game 3-3. Neither team scored during the five-minute overtime. River Lakes outshot Sartell/Sauk Rapids 35-32 for the game but got outshot in overtime 3-1.

This is the second tie of the season for the Stars, who are 6-5-2. They tied with Brainerd 4-4 in November.

The Stars played at Fergus Falls on Tuesday night and will play at Alexandria on Thursday, which is their last game until January.

Eighth grader Jenn Paul scored 30 seconds into the game, sparking a six-goal outburst by the Stars, which ended in a 10-0 victory at Princeton on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Sophomore Abbie Rhoda scored a short-handed goal less than two minutes into the game, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead. Senior Amber Schulzetenberge, sophomore Kenzie Novak, senior Allie Stalboerger, and senior Marie Omann added first-period goals for the Stars.

Sophomores Lindsey Schmitt and Greta Omann scored in the second period for the Stars, building a 8-0 lead. Schulzetenberge and Rhoda scored in the third period to make the final score 10-0.

Leading point getters for the Stars were: Schulzetenberge (four); Omann (four); Rhoda (three); Stalboerger (three); Novak (three); Greta Omann (two); and Paul (two).

Ninth grader Tracy Skluzacek made five saves to record the shutout. The Stars limited Princeton to five shots on goal, while having 44 themselves.
