The top of the Bulldogs' lineup blitzed the Albany Huskies, leading Paynesville to a key conference win on Tuesday, Dec. 12, in Albany.

The Bulldogs won the first five matches in building a 23-0 lead. They won two of the next three to widen their advantage to 31-4, virtually clinching the match with five weights to go.

The Huskies are one of the top teams in the West Central Conference North. They returned 12 starters from a year ago and were ranked 18th in the preseason rankings for Class AA.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in the WCC North, having already beaten Litchfield and Albany, the two teams considered to be their top conference challengers.

Seventh grader Sean Glenz started the Bulldogs rolling with a first-period pin at 103. It was his first varsity victory.

Adam Christian followed with a major decision at 112, and Pat Noonan won a decision at 119. Nathan Glenz recorded a first-period pin at 125, and Jeremy Sogge just missed a technical fall at 130, winning by 14 points, 20-6. He settled for four points with a major decision that ended the Bulldogs' opening run with the score 23-0.

At 140, Jeremy Fuchs won by technical fall over a fourth-place section finisher a year ago, and Joe Hiltner won by decision at 145.

The Huskies rallied in the upper weights behind their senior wrestlers, winning four of the last five matches, but it was too late.

Max Meagher, at 160, delivered the only win for the Bulldogs in this stretch. He beat another fourth-place section qualifier from a year ago 5-2.

With the victory, the Dogs improved their season record to 4-1.

The Bulldogs wrestled their last match before the Christmas holiday last night at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

They will resume competition on Thursday, Jan. 4, with a match at Big Lake.
