Wrestling: take fifth at own tournament

The Bulldogs hosted their annual Paynesville Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17. This was the first chance for the varsity individuals to compete individually this year.

There were eight teams competing in this yearís tournament, with five of the eight teams rated in the state in their class. Forest Lake was rated fifth in AAA, and Paynesville, Dassel-Cokato, and Scott West were rated 9, 10, and 11 in class AA respectively. Minneota was rated 10 in class A, as of the December Guillotine. The other three teams in this yearís meet were West Central Area, Buffalo, and Morris.

The final team scores and the individual results of the meet are as follows:
Forest Lake: 200
Dassel-Cokato: 174.5
Scott West: 154
Minneota: 150
Paynesville: 119.5
Buffalo: 111
West Central Area: 67
Morris: 56

David Kerzman was the highest Paynesville wrestler, placing second at 119.

On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Paynesville wrestlers were home against a long-time rival, Cold Spring Rocori. The Bulldog wrestlers were victorious 44-20.

This was the first match of the week for the Bulldogs. In the latest Guillotine, Paynesville was rated ninth in the state, and Rocori slipped out of the top 12 ratings.

Two key matches in the dual were at 103 and 119. At 103 Jeremy Sogge pinned Ross Malikowski, which started the Bulldogs on their road to victory. At 119, David Kerzman defeated Adam Mergen, 3-2. Mergen was rated fourth in the state at 119 in the December Guillotine. Paynesville recorded three pins and one tech fall in the match against Rocori.
