Boys basketball: Lose two close contests

This article submitted by Josh Jones and Ryan Heminson on 12/16/97.

The Paynesville Bulldog boys basketball team traveled to Melrose to take on the Dutchmen in their second conference game of the season.

In the first half things were going slow for both teams. The Bulldogs didn't seem to have the fire in their eyes they normally have during a game.

As usual, Ross Jenniges started off strong for the Bulldogs, scoring all six of his points in the first two minutes of the game. Jenniges also pulled down three rebounds in the first two minutes.

The only bad thing the Bulldogs did in the first half was getting a lot of fouls. Paynesville ended up with 12 fouls by the time the first half was over, but were still up by ten points.

Melrose outscored Paynesville 22 to 9 in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs could have put the game away at the free throw line, but only made eight out of 13. With 6.6 seconds left Lael Zwiefel came in the game and shot a three-pointer that would have tied the game, but was a very tough shot and he missed it.

The B-Squad won in their battle with Melrose and the ninth grade team also won their game.

Melrose: 9 8 22 10 - 49
Paynesville: 12 15 9 10 -46

Eden Valley-Watkins
The Paynesville Bulldogs boys basketball team traveled to Eden Valley-Watkins (EV-W) on Monday, Dec. 8.

EV-W started out the game by hitting two three-pointers, but the Bulldogs battled back. At the end of the first quarter EV-W held a slim lead, 20 to 18.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs played awesome defense not letting the Eagles score until the end of the first half. At half time, the score was 30-28, with the Bulldogs on top by two.

The third quarter was pretty even with Paynesville outscoring the Eagles 11-10.

The fourth quarter started out with Paynesville's big man fouling out. The Bulldogs also had a lot of dumb turnovers that could have been avoided and could have saved the game. The Bulldogs ended up losing the game when Striet hit his free throws to win the game for the Eagles.

The B-Squad and the ninth grade teams both had very exciting games in which they both won

EV-W: 20 8 10 12 - 50
Paynesville: 18 12 11 7 - 48
