Prairie Centre downs Bulldogs in gymnastics

By Michael Jacobson

Prairie Centre - a cooperative gymnastics team between LPGE and Sauk Centre - defeated the Bulldogs 125.5 to 111.5 on Thursday in Sauk Centre.

The Dogs topped 30 points on the floor exercise and the vault but struggled on the balance beam and uneven bars, scoring only 24.3 and 25.6 respectively.

"(Senior) Ashley Spanier injured her ankle during warmups, so we had to move three gymnasts off JV, which left JV without a full lineup on three events," said coach Deb Nehowig.

Sophomore Kacy Nehowig placed third in the all around (31.6) and placed second on the vault (8.8), floor exercise (8.5), and the bars (7.9). Eighth grader Anna Kotten was fifth in the all around (29.5) and fourth on the bars (7.4) and fifth on the vault (7.9) and floor (8.0).

"We were still able to hit 30 on floor with Cassey Lund hitting a career high of 7.15," said coach Nehowig. "Kayla Nelson was back in the lineup for us on floor with a nice routine. Kacy and Anna both had good nights scoring in the 8s."

Nehowig was pleased to see gymnasts adding new skills on the beam and bars, though Paynesville did not have good scores on these events at this meet. Prairie Centre, for instance, swept the top five spots on the balance beam, with sophomore Celia Frieler being the Dogs' top scorer in sixth place.

Kotten added back-walkovers on beam for the first time, said Nehowig, which should give her routine superior credit when she connects them. "Even though her score did not reflect it, she had a nice routine," added Nehowig.

And Frieler made a kip mount on the low bar. "Now she can begin working the kip on the high bar in order to make the skill a superior rather than a medium," said Nehowig. "This will help boost her score. Learning kips has to be one of the more frustrating skills to learn."

This week, the Bulldogs (3-2) competed at Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday. They will host their first meet on Thursday when Benson comes to the gymnasium at the Lake Koronis Assembly Grounds. Next week, the Dogs will travel to Maple Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
