BBE hits 11 treys to defeat Dogs 56-49

By Michael Jacobson

The Dogs rushed to an early lead, but BBE rallied to win the nonconference boys' basketball game 56-49 on Friday night by canning 11 three-pointers.

The Jaguars rebounded from an early deficit by making five treys in the first half and to lead 24-22 at the half. They made six three-pointers in the second half and outscored the Dogs 32-27 to win 56-49.

While the Dogs limited BBE to 15 field goals, 11 came from beyond the three-point arc. The Dogs, meanwhile, shot only 33 percent from the floor, including three of 16 from three-point land.

"It was a game where I came away feeling we played well enough to win, but we didn't because of shooting percentage," said coach Phil Carlson. "BBE scored only 56 points, and I will take this for an opponent's score any night. Our intensity was there, and they hit their threes in timely fashion."

"It hurt to have Derek Stanger in foul trouble, but we have the depth to bounce back from this," continued Carlson. "We were upset with the loss but not our efforts. Our shooting will come around, and we need to keep up the defensive intensity."

Junior Cory Nietfeld led the Dogs with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

This week, the Dogs (1-1) played Albany on Monday, Dec. 12, in their first conference game.

This weekend, the Dogs will play in a holiday tournament at Benson. On Friday night, the Dogs will play Hancock at 6 p.m. (with Benson playing Chokio-Alberta at 7:30 p.m.). On Saturday night, the third place game will be held at 6 p.m. with the championship at 7:30 p.m.

Next week, the Dogs will play at New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in another conference game.
