Pirouettes take fourth at danceline competition

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Pirouettes placed fourth out of six teams in a Class A High Kick competition held at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) High School on Saturday. In all, a dozen schools attended the danceline competition.

The standings in the Class A High Kick were: (1) New Ulm Cathedral; (2) Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop; (3) Wabasha-Kellogg; (4) Paynesville; (5) St. Charles; (6) Watertown-Mayer.

Becky Hoey, Paynesville's danceline coach, was pleased with the team's performance and finish, since the lines from both New Ulm and GFW went to state last year. "We would have placed third," said Hoey, "but we got off for about eight counts in the kick line and that really hurt our score."

Paynesville's danceline has 15 members this year, including a manager. On Saturday, 11 members danced in Winthrop.

Hoey credits the team's experience for great improvement so far this season. "I look for our scores to improve as the season progresses, as our confidence will build," she said.

The danceline's next competition will be at Albany on Saturday. It starts at noon.
