Wrestlers win Foley and home triangular

This article submitted by Jesse Spates on 12/10/96.

The Bulldogs wrestling team hosted their first match of the year on Dec. 3 when ACGC and Melrose competed with Paynesville in a triangular.

It was not a very exciting night, as the Bulldogs dominated both matches by posting scores of 67-3 and 57-3. The fact that Melrose had six forfeits and ACGC had four contributed to this.

Paynesvillematched up against Melrose first. Brandon Wendlandt started the match off with a pin. The Bulldogs lost the next match at 112 by a decision, but that was the last time Paynesville lost in this match. During the next eight matches, the Bulldogs compiled 47 points which gave them a 53-3 lead. After a double forfeit at 189, Lee Hiltner won by a major decision which brought the final score to 57-3.

Next, Paynesville wrestled ACGC and dominated this match by a even greater margin than the first. The Bulldogs won the first ten matches by recording four pins, three forfeits, two technical falls and one decision. The Bulldogs lost a close match at 171 by a score of 11-5, but in the last two matches the Bulldogs continued their high scoring ways. Brian Haines received a forfeit and Lee Hiltner won by a pin.

Of the seven pins, five occurred before the end of the first period. The final score was 67-3.

On Saturday the Bulldogs traveled to Foley to compete in their yearly tournament. Other teams competing besides Paynesville and Foley were Becker, Owatonna, Little Falls, Coon Rapids and Hibbing.

Last year, the Bulldogs came away with the team championship with a win over Foley. This year they brought home the championship, too, with a close win over Owatonna. In every match the smaller weights gained a lead so the match was either won or was able to be won by the heavyweight match.

In Paynesville's first match of the day they faced Little Falls. The Bulldogs continued to wrestle like they did on Tuesday night, trouncing the Flyers 50-6. At 103, eighth grader Dave Kerzman continued to wrestle well as he got Paynesville off to a good start with a pin. Freshman Chris Welle followed with a major decision of his own and brought the score to 10-0.

Paynesville won the next six matches. Those gaining victories during that period were Dave Ley, Jeremy Reiter, Tim Roberg, Ryan Stoneburner, Colby Scheierl and Andy Binsfeld. After Andy Heinen lost a close match in overtime, the Bulldogs won three of the next four matches and pulled out a 50-6 victory.

After beating Little Falls, Paynesviller advanced to the next round and wrestled number nine rated Coon Rapids.

This was expected to be a much closer match, but the Bulldogs continued to wrestle well and gained a bigger victory. Once again Kerzman recorded a fall in the first period at 103. Welle followed that with another pin to bring the score to 12-0. Coon Rapids came back with a pin of their own and brought the score to 12-6. Reiter, who wrestled at 125, won his match by a major decision. At 130, Ryan Stoneburner won by a decision.

Paynesville continued to win as Roberg pinned his opponent at 135, and Scheierl won by a major decision at 140. Coon Rapids took the next match by a decision and brought the score to 29-9. In the next two weights Andy Heinen, and Karl Sanborn each won by a decision. After Coon Rapids won another decision at 189, the Bulldogsí Hiltner won a very close match in overtime with a score of 3-1. The final score was 42-12. This win brought the Bulldogs to the championship match, where they would wrestle Owatonna, who is rated number seven in AAA.

In one of the most exciting matches in awhile, Paynesville pulled out a 28-24 victory.

Kerzman finished his undefeated day by winning a 5-4 decision over his opponent. Owatonna came back in the next match and tied the score at 3-3. Owatonna won the next match in overtime and gained the lead, putting Paynesville behind for the first time this year.

Paynesville rallied as Jeremy Reiter, Ryan Stoneburner and Tim Roberg all won their matches. Two of those matches were won by a pin and a tech fall. This brought the score to 17-6.

Owatonna did not give up and recorded a pin at 140 and an 8-7 decision at 145. This brought the score to 17-15, and both teams knew that this meet would probably come down to the heavyweight match. Owatonna continued to come back, winning the next match by a decision. This put them in the lead 18-17 and the Bulldogs knew they needed to win a couple of the next matches. They responded, winning the next two matches, which were probably the most exciting matches of the night besides heavyweight. With two major decisions by Zach Welle and Billy Stanger, Paynesville pulled ahead 25-18, but forfeited the 189 match. The score was 25-24, and the deciding factor of the match came down to the heavyweights.

In a battle of two rated wrestlers -- Lee Hiltner (number 1 AA) and Travis Wiuff (number 3 AAA) -- Hiltner came out on top in overtime. Each wrestler scored one point. Hiltner gained the lead after the second period with an escape, but Wiuff got his own escape in the third period, tied the match up and sent it into overtime. Hiltner finally got a takedown in overtime to win the match and put the Bulldogs on top, 28-24.

Wrestlers who were undefeated for the day were Tim Roberg, Jeremy Reiter, Lee Hiltner, Ryan Stoneburner, Dave Kerzman, Zach Welle and Karl Sanborn.

The Bulldogs' next match is on Friday, Dec. 13, at home against Sauk Centre. This will be a very important match, so fans are encouraged to come.
