Gymnasts take second in five-team meet at Morris

By Michael Jacobson

The Bulldogs gymnastics team took second in a five-team varsity-only meet at Morris on Saturday.

Only Marshall, with 124.2 points, topped the Dogs, with 115.15 points. Trailing the Dogs were Fergus Falls (112.85 points), Wadena-Deer Creek (111.4), and Morris (109.35).

"I was pleased with our performance for the first meet," said coach Deb Nehowig. "The girls did a fantastic job, and I couldn't be happier for them."

"It was encouraging to score 115, as there are many areas yet where we can easily boost that score up as their skills progress," she added.

The Dogs' goals this season include averaging 115 and eventually scoring 120. Last year, the Dogs scored 115 three times but not until after Christmas.

The Dogs placed second at the meet thanks to their consistency, placing second on the vault (32.4) and third on the uneven bars (26.65), on the balance beam (27.6), and on the floor exercise (28.5).

Sophomore Kacy Nehowig was the Dogs' top scorer in all four events: winning the uneven bars (8.4), placing third on the vault (8.6), placing fifth on the balance beam (7.7), placing sixth on the floor (7.6), and taking second in the all around (32.3).

Eighth grader Anna Kotten placed seventh in the all around (29.15), including top ten finishes in three events: uneven bars (7.2, seventh); balance beam (7.1, seventh); and vault (8.05, ninth).

Other top ten finishes for the Dogs were recorded by junior Kayla Nelson (seventh on the balance beam, 7.1); senior Ashley Spanier (ninth on the floor exercise, 6.95); and sophomore Brittney Spanier (tenth on the bars, 6.6).

This week, the Dogs will face LPGE/Sauk Centre on Thursday at Sauk Centre. Next week, the Dogs will travel to Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
