Stars fall to Stormin' Sabres, 2-1

By Jenny Habben

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team lost to Sartell/Sauk Rapids 2-1 on Friday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

All three goals were scored in the second period. "I think that both of the teams are about equal in skill," said coach Tom Petroski. "It just came down to who wanted the puck more."

River Lakes had trouble with their positioning in the first period and were not staying wide enough because the ice at the arena was bigger than the team was used to.

The Stars had a mere three shots on goal in the first period while the Stormin' Sabres had six.

The Stars' Marya Losinski skated the length of the ice to score the first goal of the game and give River Lakes the lead five minutes into the second period.

But Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored on a power play to tie the game at 1-1. Then, with a little over one minute left in the period, the Stormin' Sabres were able to score another goal due to poor defensive coverage by the Stars.

The Stars needed a goal to tie the score in the third period but could not get one. Losinski had the best chance when she skated the length of the ice again but her shot hit the top goal post and bounced out.

The Stars pulled their goalie with less than a minute left, but were unable to score even with an extra skater.

The Stormin' Sabres outshot the Stars for the game 26-13. Goalie Trisha Wendlandt made 24 saves for the Stars.

The Stars' game against St. Cloud Tech, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 27, was postponed to Monday, Feb. 4.

The Stars played at St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday. They will play at Litchfield on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. These results will be in next week.
