Stars prepare for new hockey season

It's that time of year again, and the River Lakes boys' hockey team is ready to begin their 1999-2000 season.

The Stars consist of players from the school districts of Paynesville, New London-Spicer, Albany, St. John's Prep, and Rocori. The team has players from freshmen to seniors, with different experience levels.

Returning players this year include, from Paynesville, goalie Adam Hartfiel, defenseman Eric Hartfiel, and forward Eric Habben. The other members of the team from Paynesville are forward Chris Jacobson and goalie Justin Hartfiel.

The team doesn't have enough players for a junior varsity team, so all 21 players will be on the varsity team, with six being seniors, three juniors, 11 sophomores, and one freshman.

The Stars did have a scrimmage at Morris on Saturday, Nov. 27. The score was not kept, but it gave the team some game experience and helped them see what needs improvement for their first game yesterday, at Sartell. Their first home game is tomorrow against Simley at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond at 7 p.m.

"The focus this year is on learning and improvement," said Stars' head coach Kevin Mooney. "The reason for that being, we have 15 of our 21 players that have little or no varsity experience."

All in all, the Stars look forward to a great year of high school hockey, so come and cheer us on!

The Stars play most of their home games in Richmond, but are scheduled to play four times at the Paynesville Civic Arena. They will host Mora here on Tuesday, Dec. 14, and Marshall here on Saturday, Dec. 18. The other two are scheduled for February.
