By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team opens its 2005-06 season with a game at Monticello on Thursday night.

The Stars - a joint team comprised by Albany, Eden Valley-Watkins, New London-Spicer, Paynesville, Rocori, and St. John's Prep - features eight players from Paynesville. Senior Jamie Paul and junior Alex Naujokas rejoin the varsity this year, where they will be joined by senior defenseman Derek Looman, sophomore forward Colby Peterson, and ninth grade forward Brutger Mrozek.

Paul will switch to defense this year for the Stars, who were 7-15-2 last year. Naujokas returns as a varsity forward.

Looman, Mrozek, and Peterson will also play for the junior varsity, which normally plays at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m. Also on the junior varsity from Paynesville are senior defenseman Ross Barten, junior defenseman Cyril Storkamp, and sophomore forward Brett Savelkoul.

Also this week, the Stars will host their first game against Cathedral at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond on Saturday. Next week, they will play at Apollo on Tuesday.
