River Lakes Stars take second at Duluth tourney

River Lakes Girls' Hockey team The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team won their first game of the season, shutting out Lakeville South 1-0 on Friday at the Duluth East Tourney, and reached the finals before losing 4-1 to the Duluth Northern Stars.

Junior forward Greta Omann scored the winning goal in the second period for the Stars against Lakeville South on Friday night, with sophomore goalie Tracy Skluzacek recording a shutout.

The Duluth Northern Stars built a 3-0 lead over the first two periods before the Stars scored a power-play goal in the third period on Saturday. Duluth added a third power-play goal later in the period to make the final score 4-1.

Sophomore defenseman Gina Athmann, Omann, and Skluzacek were named to the all-tournament team for the Stars.

St. Cloud Tech 7, Stars 1
St. Cloud Tech scored five goals in the second and third periods, breaking open a 2-1 game and beating the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond.

Ninth grade forward Blythe Sjoberg scored a power-play goal for the Stars five minutes into the second period, cutting Tech's lead to 2-1. She was assisted by sophomores Traci Thielen and Courtney Schirmers.

But Tech answered with a short-handed goal three minutes later and scored three goals in the last half of the second period, building a 5-1 lead. They had taken a 2-0 lead in the first period and added two goals in the third period to make the final score 7-1.

Tech outshot the Stars 38-27. Sophomore Tracy Skluzacek made 31 saves for the Stars in goal.

Junior forward Katelyn Dold scored four goals and added two assists to lead Tech's offense. Two other Tech players (Annie Green and Jessica Dhein) added four points apiece.

The Stars dropped to 0-2 in the Central Lakes Conference with the loss.

This week, the Stars (1-4 overall) traveled to Little Falls on Tuesday. The Stars will travel to Bemidji on Friday. Next week, the Stars will continue playing on the road with a game against St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
