The Paynesville Pirouette Dance Team started their season on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Team members for the 1996-97 season include returning senior dancers Emily Glenz, Sarah Nelson, Brynna Klinghagen and Krista Fuchs. Returning juniors are Jen Savage and Molly Meagher.

New members of the dance team include senior Jill Spanier, juniors Anne Nelson, Brenda Mehr, Tonya Bahner, Steph Mueller and Elizabeth McCarney and sophomore Janel Meyer. Sandy Kunze will coach the team for the second year.

At practice the girls work on conditioning, stiffness and sharpness of moves, jumps and leaps, flexibility and self-confidence.

Over the past summer the team raised money for new uniforms that are being made right now. Car washes, bake sales, a dunking booth at Town and Country Days, garage sales, contributions from local businesses and a donation from the American Legion were the main activities that raised the $3,000 the team needed to have in order to make the new uniforms. Hopefully, they will be completed by the second competition in Montevideo, where the girls will compete against neighboring schools, including New London-Spicer, Melrose and Litchfield.

This season the team will be participating in three dance team competitions and the state competition. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the girls will travel to Simley to compete for the first time of the season.

The next two competitions are on Saturday, Jan.y 11, at Montevideo and Saturday, Jan. 18, at either the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities or at Northfield. State competition is on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Target Center.

The Pirouettes will also perform at a variety of winter athletic events, such as half-time at boys and girls basketball games and before wrestling meets.c
