This year marks the first time hockey players from Paynesville, Rocori, St. John's, and Albany will be able to participate in high school hockey.

The River Lake Stars is the name for the new varsity and junior varsity boy's hockey teams. The cooperative team's home is the new River Lake Civic Arena in Richmond. A total of 37 boys have gone out for the team.

Paynesville players on the team include: seniors, Chris Soine, Dave Sorum, and Jeff Jacobson; juniors, Dustin Looman, Ryan Mackedanz, John Manthei, Dale Thelen, and Kurt Habben; sophomores, Eric Habben, Johnny Nyhlen, Eric Hartfiel, and John Kulzer.

Kevin Mooney and Joel Baumgarten will coach both teams this year. Mooney says he is very excited about the team and they should have a lot of fun this year.

During the first week, players competed to field spots on the varsity or junior varsity. After the two teams were made up, the junior varsity traveled to St. Cloud to scrimmage the Cathedral jv team. The Stars dominated the game, especially on defense, where they allowed less than 10 shots on goal. They won the scrimmage 3-0, making for a great start for the team.

The first game for both the varsity and the junior varsity is on Dec. 2. The varsity will play Maple Lake/Annandale and the junior varsity will play Mora/ Hinckley/Finlayson. The games are at the River Lakes Civic Arena in Richmond.
