BBE topples Bulldogs in hoops opener

By Michael Jacobson

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa built a 20-point first-half lead against the Bulldogs and coasted to a 59-38 win in the girls' basketball opener for both teams on Friday night.

BBE rushed to a 9-0 lead and never trailed. They outscored the Dogs 17-7 in the first quarter and then scored the first eight points of the second quarter, too. They outscored the Dogs 14-4 in the second quarter in building a 20-point lead at halftime, 31-11.

rebound The Dogs played better in the second half, scoring 27 points, compared to 11 in the first half, and the Dogs' starters had cut BBE's lead to 16 points before both teams used their reserves for the last 90 seconds of the game.

Junior Lynn Lieser and senior Sam Moser battle two taller BBE players for a rebound in Friday's game. Lieser led the Dogs with 12 rebounds.

"We dug ourselves a big hole that was too big to get out of," said coach Jackie Parsley, who was pleased with the Dogs' second-half effort and remains optimistic about their season. "We definitely have thing to work on," she said, "but they are fixable problems. We still have a good team."

The Bulldogs scored half their points on free throws against BBE. They made only nine field goals in 73 attempts, shooting 12 percent, and made one three-pointer, by junior Ashley Lieser, for 19 points. They made 19 free throws (in 34 attempts) for the other half of their points, shooting 56 percent from the charity stripe.

Senior guard Kim Hess led the Dogs with 10 points, followed by Lieser with nine and senior guard Kendra Johnson with eight.

Next week, after Thanksgiving, the Dogs will play on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Kimball and they will play their first West Central Conference North game at Sauk Centre on Friday, Dec. 3.
