Cathedral tops Stars in hockey opener 5-1

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team dropped their opener on Saturday to St. Cloud Cathedral by the score of 5-1.

After Cathedral opened the scoring with seven minutes to play in the first period, the Stars tied the score at 1-1 with a power-play goal by senior Nick Dahlen with 48 seconds to play in the first period. But Cathedral scored 37 seconds later, with 11 seconds to go in the period, to retake the lead 2-1.

Cathedral added a goal in the second period and two more in the third to win 5-1. The Crusaders outshot the Stars 31-17.

River Lakes hockey is a cooperative team between Albany, EV-W, New London-Spicer, Paynes-ville, Rocori, and St. John's Prep.

Last year, the Stars enjoyed their best season yet, setting a team record with 12 victories. They were 12-12 last year.

Paynesville players on the varsity team this year are senior defenseman Mike Mueller, senior forward Ryan Weber, junior center Jamie Paul, and sophomore forward Alex Naujokas. Paynesville players on the junior varsity this year are sophomore forward Joseph Jacklitch, sophomore forward Max Lahr, and junior defenseman Derek Looman.

The Stars played Big Lake/Becker on Tuesday this week. Next week, after Thanksgiving, they will play Little Falls in their first home game at Richmond on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The Stars will play only four home games at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville this winter: on Saturday, Dec. 11, against Bagley at 2 p.m.; on Thursday, Dec. 16, against Monticello at 7:30 p.m.; on Saturday, Jan. 29, against St. Michael-Albertville at 7:30 p.m.; and on Tuesday, Feb. 1, against Benson/Morris at 7:30 p.m.
